I will simply ask that the rights to the photos remain mine, which is necessary because I may be using them for photography shows at my school (Columbia College).

EXCERPTS FROM BOOK: "THE STREET GYPSIES" (Chicago)

��Hey,
Jack�where, ya goin�, brotha�?� Jack turned to look back and
could see his friends, Jabo, Larry and Michael Carlton standing on
the Winthrop side of Frances� Tavern where he could not have
seen them as he headed east on Lawrence until he got to
Winthrop. Frances� Tavern stood on the Southwest corner of
Lawrence Avenue and Winthrop. He stopped in the middle of the
street to turn around and walk back to where they stood.
�Hey�what y�all up to?� Jack said quickly, masking the slight
anxiousness he was feeling. �Hey, my main man, brotha� Jack!�
the old timer Jabo said flashing his characteristically broad smile.
�We just tastin�, man�you want a hit o� this vodka?� he asked
Jack. �Naw�I�m cool�I got a little taste right here myself� Jack
said as he casually went into his back pocket and pulled up his
half-pint bottle and took a sip. Jack felt somewhat relieved that
they had stopped him. He needed to slow down and relax.
Stopping to �shoot the breeze� with them was right on time.
�Hey, Mike�I haven�t seen you in a long time,�where you
been, man?� Jack asked curiously. �I been around�just been
layin� low� Mike replied very blase. �Where you at now, Mike?�
Jack inquired. �I�m up on Kenmore�at Foster� Mike answered.
Jack had known Mike for many years back to when they were
young kids living in Cabrini-Green. For that reason, the two men
felt a sort of kinship. He was never real tight with Mike but, they
would drink together and hang out whenever they ran into one
another in the Uptown area. Jack and the men stood out on the
sidewalk talking, debating, laughing and joking for a while. As
they did, Jack could see across the street the reveling concert
crowd disappearing into the entrance of the Aragon for the 4pm
show. He felt even more relieved because now, he would not be

tempted to continue his hustle while he was feeling a little too
high.
�So, what brings you down here on my end, brotha� Mike?�
Jack asked. �Aw�hey, man�I met this snow chick
earlier�she�s inside Frances� right now� Mike said to Jack as he
made a motion of his head toward the wall of Frances� Tavern.
�Why you out here with us and not in there with her?� Jack asked
inquisitively. �Is she a dog, Mike?� Jack added with a humored
expression beginning to spread across his face as he anticipated
Mike�s answer. �Naw, man� Mike replied. Jabo and Larry had
drifted a few yards away, embroiled in some other topic of
conversation as Jack and Mike stood close while they spoke.
�How she look then, Mike?� Jack asked with a puzzled curiosity
�Go look for yourself�she�s sittin� at the bar havin� a beer.�she
is the brunette chick in the blue jean outfit� Mike said with a tone
of indifference.
�Alright, brotha-man�I think I will check her out� Jack said
as he began to step away as Mike leaned non-chalantly against the
wall they were standing in front of. Jack straightened his posture a
bit as he looked back at Mike with a mixed expression of curiosity
and befuddlement. Jack almost never sat at the bar in Frances�
Tavern. He just wanted to get a look at the woman that Mike had
met to see how lucky or unlucky he was in meeting her. So, he
just walked in and headed straight for the restroom in the back. As
he walked in, he glanced quickly to his right at the woman sitting
on the third bar stool. Just as he was about to pass her, he could
see her out of the corner of his eye as she turned her head slightly
to cast a momentary glance in his direction while she was saying
something to a woman seated on the bar stool next to her. His
immediate sense was that she couldn�t really look as good as the
impression he had gotten from his quick glance. Jack made his
stop in the men�s rest room and checked his appearance in the
mirror before he stepped back out of the restroom door to walk
out. Now, his curiosity was piqued even more. He had to get a
better look at this woman to see did he really see what he first
saw. He walked the path from the restroom that passed the patrons
on bar stools to his left and the booths of patrons on the right that
led to the tavern exit. There was a fair crowd in Frances� small
tavern of about a dozen bar stools and there was a low buzz of
conversations. Jack was about to pass the brunette-headed woman

again when she swirled around on the bar stool from speaking to
the woman on her right to speak to the older man on the bar stool
to her left. At that precise moment, her eyes met Jack�s and she
held her gaze a little long and Jack could read a bold look of
interest in her eyes. A flash of excitement passed through Jack
like electricity because she did look as good as his first glance had
told him. He also noted that she was shapely by the form fitting
pants of her jean outfit. He knew right away that he liked her
looks. He could see intelligence in her face. The overall sense of
her had him very aroused. Jack was puzzled by Mike�s seeming
lack of interest in a fairly attractive woman. He paused just inside
the entrance door momentarily to think of how he was going to
play it off. He did not want Mike to know that he was interested in
his woman. He never liked doing that. It was not his style. The
code in the streets amongst Street Gypsies, when it came to
women, was �get your own� You didn�t steal another man�s
woman unless he was your enemy or you had differences and
were trying to get back at him. If he was your friend, you did not
try to make a play for his woman. Jack felt a sense of excitement
with his interest in this strange woman. He decided right then-and-there
to go ahead and �let it all hang out� Ask Mike was he
interested in the woman or did he plan to do anything with her---
and if not---let him know up front that he was interested.
Jack walked back outside to Winthrop where he and Mike
were talking. Mike was still there in the same spot�standing
there alone---looking as though he was just mellow and enjoying
his high. �Hey, brotha�, Mike�that�s your girl?� Jack asked with
a note of seriousness in his tone as soon he was close enough to be
heard. �Not really, man�I met her earlier this afternoon up the
street at Saxony�we talked for about an hour and then we went
to my crib� Mike explained. �So, then what, Mike?�did ya� bone
her or what?� Jack pressed on. �I wanted to, man but, I was too
high�I think she�s a freak�said she�s in college�she needs a
man�likes black men� Mike said with short pauses between
broken sentences. �Damn, Mike�� Jack started ��.she looks
nice, man�.you gonna� deal with her?� Jack asked, tempering his
tone to just the right degree as he treated his exchange with Mike
ever-so delicately. �Hey, Jack�she�s alright�I ain�t that crazy
about white chicks, man�I don�t feel like messin� around with
her right now� Mike said with a tone of indifference. �You sho�

you don�t wanna do nothin� with her, Mike?� Jack asked again,
pressing the issue. �Naw, man�you wanna deal with her?�be
my motherfuckin� guest� Mike said in his usual tone when he felt
irritated or was expressing his displeasure about something. Jack
knew Mike and he knew that he meant what he was saying. He
had heard enough and felt a sense of relief that he did not have to
go against the unwritten code that Street Gypsies lived by. He felt
a sense of excitement at the same time. �Hey, brotha�
Mike�introduce me, then, man�I don�t wanna go in Frances�
and just start rappin� to her and she don�t have a clue who the hell
I am�can you do that much for a brotha�?�I swear, Mike�I
won�t bother you no more after that�cool?� Jack asked using his
best, most delicate and persuasive tone.
Mike was leaning with his upper back against the wall and
after a momentary pause, sprang up from the wall and said
�Okay..come on� and started to walk the few yards toward
Lawrence Avenue to the entrance of Frances� Tavern. Mike led
Jack inside and just as he opened the entrance door, they could
hear arguing ��That�s bullshit!�you shoulda� counted the
money after I gave it to you!� Sol, Frances� brother yelled at her
as they stood near one another behind the bar. �I told you not to
do that shit time-and-time-and-time again!� Frances barked back
at Sol. �Kiss my fuckin� ass!�you hear me!�kiss my ass!�you
want me to do everything around here�then you wanna� accuse
me of cheatin� ya��I�m sick o� this shit�I can go home�I don�t
have to take this!� Sol raged on. �You need to get those damned
glasses I told you to get�you won�t get your glasses�that�s
where the hell all my damned money is disappearing to around
here�you can�t fuckin� see..you�re miscounting the money and
you won�t do nothin� about it!� Frances fired back.
Meanwhile, some of the patrons grinned and others smiled
while a few snickered; but, most ignored them as Frances and Sol
carried on their argument. It was nothing new to the people who
lived around and patronized Francis� Tavern. Frances and her
brother Sol fought like cats and dogs; often times cussing each
other in front of the patrons. They needed each other to run the
tavern but, could not work an entire shift at the bar together
without a big blowout. Frances had to be around her late-fifties,
early sixties and Sol was a few years younger. He hardly spoke
any time other than when he was having a big argument with his

sister. He walked with a limping motion from an old World War
two injury and spoke with a mild speech impediment. Together,
they were a fixture around the neighborhood. They were people
who had been raised in their homeland in the Ukraine but, had
come to America as young adults. Everyone knew them and
protected them because of their attachment to Frances Tavern and
the familiarity of them being part of the neighborhood. They lived
in a two-flat they owned together in a Ukrainian neighborhood
several miles northwest of where the tavern was.
Mike stepped over to the brunette-headed woman still sitting
at the bar and began to say a few words to her, holding his head
close to her�s as they spoke because of the loudness of Frances
and Sol�s arguing. They took turns talking into each other�s ear.
Finally, Mike turned to Jack standing a few feet behind him,
waiting as patiently as he could. Mike stretched his arm out with a
flat palm to point to Jack �Tina, this is a good friend of mine,
Jack�he lives around this way� he said as he looked at Jack and
moved to one side of her to allow their introduction. The brunette-headed
woman smiled pleasantly as she extended her hand to Jack
and Jack took her hand and held it in both of his, gently clasping
one open palm on the top and the other on the bottom of her hand
for a long moment. He smiled his best smile at her and said �It is
my, pleasure�I�m pleased to meet you� trying to sound as
gentlemanly as he could and to hide some of his rough edges. �I�ll
buy beers for all of us and we can sit at a booth�is that cool with
you, Tina�Mike?� Jack asked both politely as he could. �I�d like
that�thank you� the woman said as she held her gaze. �Cool�
Mike mumbled. Jack paid for the beers and they found an open
booth at the back of the tavern.
Jack couldn�t have been more pleased at how things were
developing. He felt encouraged by the vibes that he was getting
from this strange woman. The desire that he was feeling for her
had put him in a charming, witty mood. He had not felt this way
in quite some time. What he felt was more than a sexual desire.
Somehow, a little random romance seemed to be just the remedy
for his soul right now. He had enjoyed the times that he had in
recent months with a few fairly desirable women. But, they were
women he had met roaming the streets of Uptown who traveled in
the same circles that he did. They were encounters of necessity

that left him feeling nothing more. This woman had that
something that made him want her.
They all sat and talked about any and everything; laughing and
joking the whole time. Jack made several flirtatious comments to
Tina, keeping them subtle enough so as not to offend his friend,
Mike. Even though Mike had told him that he didn�t have an
interest in her, it would not have been righteous of Jack to �front�
Mike off. A lot of things that went on between Street Gypsies
went unsaid. Sometimes, �one man�s meat was another man�s
poison� Even if a man didn�t want a woman, you didn�t make him
look bad by making a play for her right in front of him or other
people who knew the situation. Mike was loose and feeling good.
He engaged in the conversation with occasional low-key laughter
and short quips; but, seemed insulated and oblivious to the
undercurrent of mutual interest between Jack and his new
acquaintance.
�Hey, y�all�I got to make it to the crib�I�m gettin�
sleepy�I cain�t hang no more� Mike said to Jack and Tina.
�Mike�what�s wrong, man?�you that sleepy? Jack asked.
�High and sleepy, brotha��I need to lay down for a while�I�m
gone, y�all�be cool� Mike replied as he began to rise from the
booth. �You want us to walk you home, Mike?�if you�re too
high, man, you oughta� let us see you get home alright, brotha�?�
Jack replied, turning his attention to his old buddy with genuine
concern. �Yea�I want to see that you get home okay, Mike� Tina
added. �Naw�that�s okay�don�t spoil ya� good times on
account o� me�I�ll be alright�I can make it by myself� Mike
said with a hint of manly pride. � Mike�at least let us get you a
cab, �don�t go out there and pass out somewhere�.I want you
to get home� Tina pleaded. �Hahaha�.ahahaha..
whoowee!�Mike laughed. �Come on, now�be serious�ain�t no
cab gonna� stop for me out here on Lawrence�.besides�I only
live up on Foster, four blocks away�by the time you flag down a
cab, I�ll be home already�..�Mike reasoned with conviction,
invoking the cynical sentiments and reality that most black men
understood well.
�Why wouldn�t a cab stop for you Mike?� Tina asked
innocently. aaaahaha �.hahahahaha� Both men burst out in
laughter.

�Hehehehehahaha�.they continued��Whooowweee!�. You
know somethin�, Tina�you are funny as hell�you know�the
latest statistics say eighty-five percent of the black male
population don�t know what the inside of a cab looks like and the
other fifteen percent only know �cause they�re cab drivers�can
you dig that?..hehehe..�Jack snickered. �I got tears comin� out of
my eyes� Mike said, trying to let his amused laughter subside as
he wiped the thin streams of laughing tears from his cheeks.
�Tina, that woke me up, sho-nough!� Mike quipped. �I don�t
understand�what�s so funny?� Tina asked with a puzzled,
innocent look on her face as she turned to one then, the other of
the two men. �Tina�cabs don�t like to stop for us colored
fellas�it�s as simple as that� Jack said with a straight face. �I�m
sorry�I know there is a lot of prejudice out there� Tina said.
�Well�hey�.let me get goin��I�ll take a cab�it�s cool� Mike
said more seriously.
The three of them gathered themselves and walked out of
Frances� Tavern. Sol and Frances had stopped arguing by that
time and the place had returned to the normal hum of
conversations �I got an idea, Tina�would you flag a cab for
Mike?�. alright?�they�ll stop for a fine woman like you��
Jack said before he realized what he had said. Tina looked at Jack
with a sweet, glowing smile as they were walking along the
sidewalk in front of Frances� Tavern. She seemed very pleased
with those words and the fact that Jack had revealed what he was
thinking. He had hinted around at the booth in Frances� but, had
not said anything quite so forward until now. �I�m a fine woman,
huh?� she said still smiling with an aroused, warm expression that
pierced Jack through-and-through. �Oh, yes�fine� Jack finally let
out after a slight pause while he looked her straight in the eyes.
From that point, they walked alongside each other holding a gaze
for a long moment with Mike walking along on the other side of
Jack, separated by about a yard where he was not privy to the
warm exchange between the two.
After Tina waited for a cab to flag while the three of them
milled around near Frances�, they decided to walk two blocks
west to the corner of Lawrence and Broadway to have a better
chance at her catching a cab for Mike. Finally, a cab was seen in
the distance south of them on Broadway heading north toward the
group as they stood on the southeast corner of Broadway and

Lawrence. Tina waved at the cab as it drew nearer in the stream of
northbound traffic. The cab stopped and she opened the rear
passenger door and turned and beckoned to Mike. �Mike�come
on�.here you go..�� Are you going to come back out?� Tina
asked after Mike walked up to her and was standing in front of the
open cab door. �I don�t know�.maybe�� Mike responded
wearily. �You can call me if you want�okay?� Tina added. Mike
just shook his head up-and-down slightly to acknowledge what
she had said. Meanwhile, Jack walked up to the cab front
passenger side and said �Here�s the fare�take care o� my boy��
as he reached in and handed the driver a five dollar bill. Mike
entered the cab. Tina closed the door and the cab sped away.
At last----this was the moment that Jack had hoped for---alone
with this sexy, strange woman. He cherished his friendship with
Mike. But, he was glad that he had cleared the way to get close to
her as well as his conscience. He paused and looked her up and
down while she was still watching the cab speed off; all in a quick
couple of seconds. She was attractive and he wondered how Mike
could not be really attracted to her just because of her color. As
far as Jack was concerned, there was plenty to like about her; from
her openness and nice personality to her apparent intelligence; her
good looks and that shapely body---and just as important, she was
not prejudiced---she liked black men. Jack never understood all of
this racial stuff about segregation---limiting your choices, that
many people practiced. Many seemed to behave as if it was illegal
to be with someone of a different race or culture. He didn�t go
along with it and was not going to let society or anyone dictate
what he could or could not do. He was going to do whatever he
wanted. How could he pass up such a woman because of color?
�So�.what should we do now?� Tina asked with a smile and
an expression on her face that held a hint of anticipation. �Let�s
hang out, baby�keep the good times rollin�� Jack said as he tried
to suppress the excitement he was feeling because he knew it
didn�t look cool. �Tell ya� what�.let�s go catch the show over at
the Green Mill across the street over there� Jack suggested as he
pointed across to the northwest corner of the intersection. �You
know what�it seems crowded and noisy over there from what I
can see and hear�can we go somewhere that�s more quiet so we
can talk and get to know something about one another?� Tina said
in a reasoning tone. Jack paused for a brief moment. That was

very thoughtful of her and even more encouraging than he
expected, he thought. �You, know what, girl?�I like that
idea�you are on the ball�why didn�t I think of that?...you
hungry?�we can go over to the Delmar across the street and I�ll
treat you to dinner� I�m kinda� hungry and I know you haven�t
had dinner, either�how about it?� Jack offered. �You know what,
boy?�you�re on the ball�I like that� Tina said as she patted him
jokingly on the back. �Alright, you got me�damn�that was a
good imitation of me�� Jack said as he was caught off-guard
and now was even more impressed with her spontaneous sense of
humor. �Just start stepping it off to the restaurant, young man�
Tina continued to joke. The two of them walked casually across
Lawrence after getting the green light and entered the restaurant.
It was about 9:30pm and they sat, ordered, ate and talked.
�So�Jack�what do you do?� Tina asked as the two ate.
�Uh�what was that?� Jack asked, feeling a little caught off-guard
again. �What do you do?�what kind of job do you have?� Tina
reiterated. �Oh�uhh�I�m a street hustler� he said point-blank.
�A street hustler?�what does that mean, exactly?� Tina asked.

I am an established professional artist that has traveled the world working on my passion. Won many international awards and published in Magazines. Artists have been killed in this economy more than anyone I know. I refuse to give my work away and hope you feel the same. I have this idea that might lesson this blow we are experiencing from less to no buyers. Then we have all these galleries that felt this blow as well but tried to make us artist's pay for their mishap buy charging us fees to hang our work. Most of these galleries are gone now, thank god. Now we have all these same people that owned the galleries trying new things to get our money, like charging us to have our art in their book or having competitions that cost us 25 to 50 dollars a pop with judges that aren't qualified or consulting competitions that they will charge a huge price to give you their stupid advice. These are the same gallery owners that are out of business guys.

I have an idea that some might like and some won't. I am looking to meet other professional artists that love art and would like to trade other artists our work instead of giving it away for cheap. I myself wont sell my things cheap but will make some trades for others art.
I commend all emerging artists and beginners but this would not be for you. I am only wanting to talk to other established artists have sold pieces of art over 1,000.
I am not seeking to start some new web-site or anything like that. Just here to put other pro artists together and see if we can exchange some wonderful pieces of art.

Smaller ones can be finished in less time. Art is sold unframed and unsprayed. I do not use fixative on my work. We could work something out with framing if interested for an extra charge.

You could always hang up prints, but nothing is better than the real thing.
Drawings are done on Arches Hot Press Watercolor Paper. Either 140 lb or 300 lb.
Portraits make great gifts or wall hangers in offices or other types of businesses.

Hi,

This is taking off like those Cape Horn great white sharks jumping out of the water. Really, I had no idea how much interest would come out of my shark art. It just proves practice makes perfect. I have dozens of sketchbooks filled with sharks and dozens and dozens of shark paintings.

I have found a gallery interested in having a group show featuring my sharks. This will be an event we can take on the road. I'll be the showman and this is about having fun. I am still working on the pricing, this will cost us about $25.00 a piece for gallery fees, no commission. You keep 100% of sales.

The working title for the show is "Sharked." It will feature artists from many different backgrounds and I make shark art influenced by your best work. This is similar to the shows where artists team up with florists and display their paintings with floral displays. It will be lighthearted with teeth.

You can work in any medium, the only rule is send me your best. Realism is ideal, but abstracts can work. Higher detail the better. I will shark your art and pass it on to the board of directors for the go ahead and you're in. I'll send you a digital copy of the samples I make whether they make it in the show or not, free of charge. Don't worry about copyright, parodies are fully-protected. Being a comedian has more legal protection than serious professions:) Having parodies of your art made is free advertising. Like a caricature.

Once we select the artworks for the show, I'll make finished parodies of your work. In affect, I am acting like an agent justifying your work by focusing attention on it's composition, color, mood, and so on. When we greet our guests to the show we can act in character and blab in artspeak to entertain. Get this, the gallery director has this wonderful British accent. We could make a killing.
