These Territories Three

December 8th, 2009 you have the opportunity to represent the state of Illinois in a mail art show housed within the BLANK gallery in Gainesville, Florida. As long as you live in Illinois you are eligible. The parameters are by no means limited, as long as your object, painting, poem, story/writing, music recording, photograph, whatever you decide is �art� fits within an envelope, a box, a paper bag, you choose the vehicle that gets the object here, as long as the package is no larger than 7 1/2 by 5 1/8 by 14 3/8. (This is the size of an average shoebox)

Feel free to spruce up the exterior of your package but keep in mind, it�s what�s inside that counts.

The theme of the show is �roots�, interpret this anyway you would like. Three individuals are curating this show, one from Ohio, one from Kentucky and myself from Aurora, Illinois. The plan is to take one idea, propose it to three states and see the differences in how the word �roots� in translated taking into account our different cultures, societies, regions and so on.

Please ship your package to me as soon as possible; the deadline is December 1, 2009.

Im an ex-punk rocker.. I have changed drastically over the years and now I cant seem to find my niche. I try to go out with random friends and all they want to do is go drinking or go to shows. I am very over the need to do that.

I like to paint, sculpt, draw, and do other art. I like post apocalyptic look like steam punk and mad max and the thunder dome. I enjoy playing and collecting old video games, thrift shop, cooking, working out, swimming, and being goofy.

I like some comedies like Its always Sunny in Philadelphia and Curb your Enthusiasm. I also enjoy horror and sci-fi.

I have some piercings and still think outside the box, which made me love punk rock and that mentality for so long. I just listen to other stuff now but music isn't really a big thing for me, rather just background noise. I like visual stuff better.

I have one cat and a bearded dragon. I have a bunch of plants and own the place I live at so it will be awhile till I move.

I am producing a film for Columbia College. We lost our location last minute and are in need of a large open room at least 20' x 20' with electricity. The film is an abstract look at the workings of the human mind, and takes place entirely in an 8' x 8' box that we will make out of drywall. Shooting is scheduled to begin this Tuesday so time is very short. We will be working and shooting there during daytime hours from tues the 17th to wed the 24th and can have everything torn down and out of there immediately after the last shot. N.A.I.L.S. (Neighborhood
Artists in Logan Square) is planning to have its Second Annual
Holiday Art Sale on Saturday, December 5th from 2-8PM and
Sunday, December 6th from 12-5PM. In keeping with the neighborhood
focus of the group, this call is open to Logan Square and surrounding
area artists.

We have secured a location
for the event; it will be held inside a currently vacant store front near
the intersection of Milwaukee and California (very close to the California
Blue Line stop). It will be held concurrently with Chicago Artillery's
Holiday Show just a few doors down, so we expect a lot of foot
traffic. We also plan to send out press releases to the major local
publications (Reader, Red Eye, etc.).

You would be responsible
for bringing everything you need for your "booth" --
including tables, chairs, displays, or extra lights. Booth spaces are approx. 6'x6'. The
fee for participating is $40. Additionally we will
request each artist to bring a food item or a non-alcoholic
drink, and donate a piece of art (valued at $20 minimum) for a silent
auction, where proceeds will go toward future events for N.A.I.L.S.
No commission will be taken from any sales, and each artist will
be responsible for their own sales and methods of
payment.

Finally, he decided that he was not going to stay inside for the
rest of the evening. He needed some human interaction and
decided to dress and go outside to see what was going on. Jack
freshened up and decided to go to the Wilson-Malden corner
where the Wilson Liquor store was. He would not show himself
on Lawrence Avenue today; even though he had kept his hashish
sales to the concert crowd only. He knew it was not a good idea to
go back the very next day to where he had beat people out of
money. He left out of his apartment and walked through the eerie
silence in the drab lobby of the Arms. He could see a couple of the
residents loitering and looking lonely and somber with nothing to
do. After walking through the entrance to the outside, he turned
left and strode south on Malden.
He arrived at the northeast corner of Wilson and Malden.
When he turned left to head east on Wilson, he immediately saw
three older men, perhaps ten to fifteen years older than himself,
sitting on concrete steps directly across from the Wilson Liquor

store. They were huddled together, passing around a large bottle
of liquor as they sat, talked and drank. He recognized them all
from around the neighborhood; but, noticed right away that two of
them were the gritty dude who gave him the twenty dollar bill the
other day and his buddy. �Hey, my man�.what�s happ�nin�,
bro?� the �gritty� one spoke out to Jack after he turned his head
slightly to his right to see Jack approaching. �Ain�t nothin� goin�
on, my man�say�ain�t you the stud who gave me that
package?� Jack asked the �gritty� one. �Yea, bro-man�that was
me� now, you did understand what the deal was, didn�t you?�
The stranger asked. �Hey�well�I didn�t know right then but, I
figured it out a little later on� Jack replied. �Yea�I fig� �ud
that�yea�naw, bro..I wasn�t just handin�out money for the hell
of it�that was your cut for stayin� cool�that�s what them Italian
mafia in the flicks call�.hush money�hehehehe� the stranger
said as he chuckled and slapped hands to give five with his
accomplice who was sitting right next to him. They all chorused
in with agreement after he made that statement by laughing and
saying �Yea...you got that right�hush yo� mouth money� and
�Right on�shut-the-fuck-up money!�hahhaha� and they all
seemed tickled by the shared quip. �Hey, my man�I�ll tell
you�that double-saw sho� �nough� came in handy, �cause I was
short at the time� Jack admitted as he grinned good-naturedly at
the thought of that fortunate moment. �What�s ya� name, brotha-man?�
Jack asked as he began to feel a sense of fellowship from
the stranger and his group and extended his hand to him for a
shake. The stranger extended his hand and they shook. �They call
me �Mo��Motic� the stranger said with a sense of sinister
pride. Jack shook with the others �Obie� one said �Julius� the
other said. �I could see you was a player, bro-man�we know�d
you�d reca��nize a hustler doin� his thang�we was makin� money
when you seen us up in the Arms over there and we cain�t afford
to have nobody trickin� on us�that�s how we play it�twenty
dollars ain�t nothin� to keep from gettin� twenty years� Motic said
again as he slowly began to chuckle after he realized the double-entendre
and leaned slightly to his left and cut his eyes without
turning his head and said �Y�all hear what I said?�y�all dig
that?� to the others sitting behind and beside him as he continued
to chuckle. The others let out low, easy laughter and said in
agreement �Hell yea�I�ll give up twenty dollars to keep from

doin� all that time� and �You know it�you got to know how to
play this thang out here� After the spirited exchange between
them subsided, Jack said �Man�that was a clever move�I really
didn�t see nothin� but it woulda� been insurance if I did�seein� as
how I didn�t know y�all and y�all didn�t know me�but...I ain�t
the type to trick�I�m a hustler myself..I do thangs that I wouldn�t
want no tricks to see� �Yea�I see you dress like a
player�hey�you want a taste?� Motic said as he extended the
large pint bottle of liquor to Jack �Naw�that�s cool, Motic�I
was gonna get myself a taste a little later on�thanks, anyway�
Jack replied. �You welcomed, now�we don�t care nothin� �bout
this shit, man�we shares our drinks�just don�t ask for none �o
my� �hair-on� and we cool� The stranger said, getting tickled
with himself with that last phrase and again, turning with a broad
smile to his cohorts for approval and extending his hand to the
closest one for another �five� hand slap. �Fuck you, Mo� Obie,
the closest one said as he playfully slapped Motic�s hand away
rather than slapping �five� ��you better give me some o� yo�
�hair-on� and that �blow� and any other kinda� high you got,
nigga�� far back as we go and all the shit we been through
together�damn right� Obie said facetiously as he feigned
disapproval of Motic�s statement. �Motic just let out another
chuckle and then turned somewhat serious as he turned to Jack. �
See�these ain�t just my hustlin� buddies�these is my home-boys�
we all from Memphis..we hustlers�killers, man�.you
don�t wanna� cross neither one �o these players�they may laugh
and joke with ya��but, they don�t play�cross �em and I�d leave
town if I was you�understand me?�know what I�m sayin?�
Motic said to Jack in a blustery manner. � I hear...ya�, bro��I
hear ya� Jack said in agreement, not really being all that
impressed. While he knew this was probably true and that they
were a ruthless bunch---he had struck a chord with them and they
all had the same understanding. Jack knew how the game went---
he knew not to cross the regulars out here in the streets---you only
played on the marks and not other hustlers. �Yea, bro��we
gambles, stick-up, sell dope, pimp hoes�it don�t matter..we do it
all� Motic went on in a boisterous manner. This was the usual
kind of talk that Jack would hear all around the circles he traveled
in Uptown. It seemed that there were very few who didn�t try to
impress people from their mouth---that is building themselves up

through mere talk. It was common and he was used to hearing it.
It was not really his style but, whenever he found himself doing it-
--it was for some reason other than trying to impress. It was
usually because he was setting up some mark to rip him off while
he was hustling. Doing it just to impress was pointless as far as
Jack was concerned. If it didn�t make him any money---then he
didn�t give a damn about it.
Jack continued his street corner �bullshittin� with Motic and
his group when his friend Sandy appeared across the street. She
was one of the neighborhood women that he had made friends
with almost from the beginning when he moved into Uptown. She
was a woman about ten years older than Jack. She was one of his
drinking buddies. Sandra had two little boys; little David who was
about four years old and Gerald who was about six years old. The
boys� fathers were two different men who were regulars in the
neighborhood. Little David was �Old Man� Dave�s son and little
Gerald was Coley�s son; and because she had a son by his close
friend, Coley, Jack called her his �play sister-in-law� She
occasionally talked about a grown daughter that Jack had never
seen who lived in another part of Chicago. Sandra was a rather
plain-looking woman. She possessed a great spirit and was a
funny and fun-loving person who loved to laugh. She was a very
good piano player and played at church services at the Leland
Baptist Church at Leland and Winthrop. Jack did not quite
understand how she drank so much and attended church. But, she
was his friend; like family; so, he did not care what she did and
did not try to judge her. Jack and Sandra had shared many a laugh
and quite a few drinks together. Whenever they saw one another,
each knew that there was a good time in store. Occasionally, the
three of them, Coley, Jack and Sandra would drink together if
Sandra had someone to watch the kids, like Becky, who lived with
her much younger boyfriend, Roosevelt. They lived in the huge
apartment building that took up the area from the northwest corner
of Winthrop and Leland back to the alley on it�s west side. Their
apartment was situated right over the Leland Baptist Church and it
was convenient for the baby-sitting arrangement that Sandra had
with Becky. Becky loved children and baby-sat without pay for the
sheer joy of having the little boys around. She loved them and
would occasionally help Sandra out with money for the two boys.

As soon as he spotted her across the street at the opposite corner,
Jack said to the group
�Hey, fellas�there goes some �o my people�I need to holla�
at her�.I�ll check y�all later� With that, he strolled across the
street, smiling as he walked toward Sandra and her two little boys.
�Hey, woman�what you up to?� Jack greeted her. �Hey, Jack�
Sandra replied with her usual broad smile. �I�m headed to
church� I wish I had time to get me a little taste �cause these
little rascals been gettin� on my nerves all this mornin��.I�ll be
glad when I get over there and hand they little butts over to Becky
for a while� Sandra said in her characteristically plaintive tone.
�What you doin�?�.why don�t you walk me on over there and if I
see you when I get out, I�ll buy us a taste�alright?� Sandra
offered. �Sho� �nough, sister-in-law�.you know that ain�t no
problem� Jack said with a tiny bit of reluctance because he didn�t
really want to go that way. But, he decided to go ahead with
Sandra and just not go up on Lawrence Avenue and to stay around
Leland Avenue. He knew that it was very unlikely that he would
run into some of his hash customers and he knew, too that because
of the way he played his game by only selling to those that
seemed to be already high; that he had little to worry about. But
still, he operated this way as a matter of routine. Because it
seemed to assure that there were no confrontations with unhappy
hash customers.
They walked and talked as they guided the two boys along the
way, alternately carrying them across big streets and allowing
them to walk when it was safe on the sidewalks. Their chat was
occasionally punctuated with laughter, as always. These little get-togethers
always seemed to lift the spirit of each of them. They
seemed to understand each other just as most friends who had
made such an amiable connection often did. Finally, they arrived
in front of the church on Leland. �Okay, now Jack�I�ll be lookin�
for you when I get outta� church�don�t go nowhere�okay?�
Sandra said, sounding hopeful that Jack would submit to her
request. �I�ll be out here�.just look around�you�ll see me��
Jack said, avoiding a firm commitment. �Alright,
then�good....�cause I want to get mellow when I come out�I�ll
see you later�I got to get them up to Becky�s before I go in the
church�she gon� keep �em �til tomorrow mornin��I�ll be free
the rest of the night�hallelujah!� Sandra said with a broad smile

as she entered the stairwell next to the church entrance to climb
the stairs to Becky and Roosevelt�s apartment.
Jack stood momentarily in front of the church entrance after
she and the kids were gone. He began to see a couple of parked
cars on the block with people emerging from them. They were
church-goers coming for the Sunday service. Jack decided to go to
the corner, away from the church�s entrance lest anyone mistook
him for someone who wanted to go inside. Besides, he did not feel
like having to speak and say hello to the church-goers who would
soon be crossing his path to enter the church. He knew from
experience that when they spoke to him, they would throw in a
�praise God� or a �bless you, brother� which was fine and good.
But, he felt a mild uneasiness from such piety because it was a
rebuke to how he was now living his life.
He stood on the northwest corner of Winthrop and Leland and
looked north to see that the streets were mostly empty. In the
distance, the Aragon stood still and silent with remnants of trash
littering the area around it from the people traffic and revelry that
had ensued the night before. The day was still partly cloudy and it
was early evening. Jack could feel the subdued mood in the air
that he knew so well of these quiet Sunday evenings. They were
quiet for most people but, not for Gypsies like Jack who had no
obligations on Monday mornings and did not have any particular
direction nor any orderliness in their lives to maintain. Gypsies
did not live by the same clock, schedule or beliefs that normal
people did---almost everything they did was spontaneous.

For those not counting, 2010 will be the 10th annual Chicago Anarchist Film Festival. As always, we will present a sample of films from mainstream sources, rediscovered classics and the works of filmmakers engaged in social change with an anarchist vision.

Organizers are now seeking un- and under-distributed films and videos to include in the 2010 Chicago Anarchist Film Festival.
We also welcome suggestions for titles that may inadvertently allow anarchy to seep through the cracks of the status quo. Movie collage, music videos and trailers for works-in-progress will also be considered. Deadline- April 1, 2010

All entries must be submitted with an entry form. A contributor�s statement and any promotional material are appreciated. Please also indicate if you are available and interested in attending the festival.

Submissions should be DVD (2 copies, any zone) or vhs (pal or ntsc). It may be possible to screen 16mm as well, but we need video for purpose of review. Selection is based on time allocation, relevance, quality and resonance. In addition to our invaluable appreciation and heartfelt thanks, we will be collecting audience feedback that can be provided to contributors on request. We are working on having a 10th Anniversary Chicago Anarchist Film Festival Prize. All entrants will be updated on the status of their submissions after the deadline has passed. We ask the contributions be made with the anarchist spirit of community and celebration with which they will be received. Solidarity!

Water is both physical and symbolic. It can be a destructive force and a life giving element. Without it we would not survive, but too much and our lives would be drastically altered. Elements of Water will showcase how diverse water can truly be.

John Paul Caponigro is an artist, author, educator, and digital pioneer. John Paul is one of Canon's Explorers of Light and an Epson's Stylus Pro. He is a contributing editor for Digital Photo Pro and a columnist for PhotoshopUser and Apple.com. John Paul's work has been published widely. Well respected as an authority on creativity and fine digital printing, John Paul teaches both privately in his studio and internationally at prominent workshops in North America. In 2002, Zoom Magazine named John Paul one of the 15 best artists of the past 30 years. In 2006, John Paul was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame.

Exhibition and Awards: With selection for this exhibition, artists and their work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and others who appreciate the fine art of photography.

Seeking artists for group shows for the 2010 season. We are seeking 2-D, 3-D, and small art object artists to exhibit for month long exhibits and monthly openings. Gallery receives traffic from the building and from clients for events held in the space.

Please include slides of available work, artist�s statement, CV or resume, and a short biography. Include website with contact information if applicable. We will choose artists that work well as a grouping and contact you with the proposal. Gallery commission is 30% (20% for genuine �emerging� artists). No fee to submit or hang.

My rate is $40 which includes 2 hours of shooting, an hour of editing ( color correction, exposure adjustments, cropping), and a CD of all of your images.

I can also shoot with film, in which case it would be about $12 more to cover the film and processing costs.

Figure Drawing Sessions - $10

Live model sessions are held at the gallery every Tuesday at 7:30pm to 9:45pm. And also on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:45pm. The gallery address is 1418 W. Division.

Fee is $10 and any artist may attend regardless of skill level.

Easels and tables are also provided, first come-first serve.

Artists must bring their own drawing/painting supplies. Wacom users please bring an extension cord for your laptop.

Instruction and critique is provide if requested...but please note that this is not a "class" and individual attention may be limited and/or shared with others pending session size. Think of the sessions as an art gym. You'll be coming to exercise your talents and give yourself a good art workout.
