Morpho Gallery at 5216 North Damen will continue its Local and Emerging Artist events this summer beginning July 11th for a 2 week show. Our non commission policy enables artists to sell their art work at reasonable prices.

$25 hanging fee per piece- Over 36 inches is $40. Entries must be recieved by June 15th.

We accept ALL MEDIAS and will jury the entries and return fee's of artists we DO NOT exhibit.

Most artists learn early on that what you call someone or something is not what it is. Few artists create works that everyone enjoys or understands. I have read some of the posts by the labelled artist and they are defensive. If you have artwork for sale, it belongs in the for sale section. Though, I am happy to read and look at anyone's art in this section for sale or not. I believe that we should act civilly towards everyone, even those who adopt the defensive stance.

Well being an artist with my images in a few different Art Galeries, I can feel for an emerging Artist submitting his or her work to Galleries and not hearing back from them. Anyone who is passionate about what they do has a right to at least hear back from a Gallery letting them know. I always get an answere weather its yes or no. I have never heard of a reputable Gallery not at least sending you a quick e-mail. It usualy takes two weeks for me to hear back from descent Galleries. Hammer Galleries do not have a good reputation, so I wouldnt even bother with sending them your used toilet paper. As far as others telling you that its part of the proccess aren't passionate about what they do or know there work is not good. Thats why there is a new trend of Artists are coming together opening there own Galleries. Its about time.

Please don't bash Chris Ware until you've READ his comics! And his "enlargements" are actually all hand drawn- in this day of every damn comic and graphic everything is computerized pixels slopped onto paper, it's so cool to know someone's out there doing it all --even lettering-- by hand. His storylines are definitely not heartless. They're very clever, and oftentimes emotional, esp. if you're a Chicago native, you can instantly relate to his world.

By the way, what the hell is "post-ironic" supposed to mean? Why does every adjective have to be hyphenated, like it's supposed to impress the laypeople or something? The grad school artspeak crap doesn't cut it when especially it comes to CW's work. Take the work for what it is, not the jargon constructed around it.

Most galleries show crap and I mean utter crap, but I happen to love it when a comic artist/illustrator like Ware gets a show in some hifalutin gallery. Wish more comic artists would get the spotlight, and not the everyday douchebags that can't draw their way out of a paper bag and make shit that's always abstracted and looks like a used palette. Any of those River North galleries specialize in such inane artists. Plus they do their own scouting for artists, so the unsolicited CD submissions are the probably the first to get tossed each day. Good God- don't expect to break into the vanity galleries on the first try.

Back about a decade ago when I was first starting out as an artist I sent a full set of slides to Carl Hammer. Slides were more expensive and time consuming to label properly than today's CD's. After they had them for 3 MONTHS I finally called to see if I could have them back while I was still young.
I really don't know how busy those assholes could be considering you could fire a canon thru their gallery any day of the week and never hit anyone.
(The same could be said for most galleries along Superior Street).
I think Carl Hammer could win an award for having the longest streak of consistently pretentious and godawful exhibits.
I was walking by their place yesterday and saw that some moron who enlarges those safety pamphlets you get on airplanes was given a show. That joins the monolithic procession of heartless, post-ironic, too-clever-by-half, "subversive" crap that they seemingly specialize in.

Little wonder contemporary art is irrelevent to most people.

btw I have never met Mr. Hammer but I doubt anyone in the Chicago art scene could be as loathsome as Maya Polsky.

Carl Hammer held your slides captive for THREE WHOLE MONTHS and you didn't call the FBI?

Yeah, I was also sending out slides back before the digital days, and yeah galleries sat on them for three months... or four... or more. I don't recall if Carl Hammer was one of the galleries. The point is, that it's pretty typical. It used to be inconvenient and expensive, but now that we have cheap CDs it's not an issue at all... except for one person. Anyway either accept that or don't submit your work.

Oh and to the turnip head that started all of this: I'm not the one you have been calling "art hater", and you can go ahead and flag this if you want to kid. I'm not going to flag your latest post, the one with your paintings. I want them to stay up. They speak for themselves... I can see why Hammer's not interested.

Hi. I live in Minnesota and when i saw all this Carl Hammer is evil stuff i cracked up. I am 19 and even i know that galleries are busy, the submission process is slow and just because you dont get feedback or a response doesnt mean a gallery is evil. Currators are busy people recieving lots of submissions, also, a lot of galleries review submissions only a few times a year or sometimes even once a year. Obviously this does not make a gallery a bad place or "evil." If you call asking someone about your CD or portfolio, of course they arent going to know what your talking about- ITs probably in a pile that has not yet been reviewed or some other legit reason...

If you are seriously going to be a working artists you going to have to get used to rejection and you will have to learn patience. Aside from that there is no need to go around bashing the people who are helping others gain exposure. As artists in a community we should stick together, support our local galleries and support eachother in our carreers. Just thought id throw it out there

The bills will coerce you to register your work with for-profit registries as a condition of protecting your copyrights. Any unregistered pictures will be subject to Orphan Works infringement. This is a radical departure from international copyright law and normal business practice.

Are you serious? That happens at even the most low level galleries. I know Carl and Yolanda. I assume you talked to Yolanda. They are very honest people. They get submissions from all over the country and there is no way they can keep track. You have to learn quickly that this will happen to you over and over again and not take it personally. If the gallery doesn�t throw you stuff away, they usually file it away. They are far too busy to look at everything. Maybe one day they will get to it. I think you are over reacting. Just keep submitting your stuff and try to get into as many shows because that�s how they will notice you.

On 11/28/07 I contacted the Carl Hammer Gallery to ask about their submisson policy. I assume that it was Carl himself who responded and said to send in a CD or web address. The same day I sent them my CD. After 3 months, I did not receive a response; I called them, I emailed them and they had no idea what happened to my CD. I finally went down to the gallery and heard the same excuse how they receive so many submissions and they cannot possible respond to every one. I just wanted to know what happened to my CD, they did not even have the courtesy to ask for another CD. I am wondering if any one else had a similar experience with this gallery. I just wanted to let people know about this.
