I agree that you should not have a deeply troubled conscience. The owner had plenty of warning. But for what your post was intended to do, it is not very effective... What kind of bike was it, what area, neighborhood or building was it taken out of?

You might want to provide some scant bits of information if you're trying to reconnect the owner with his bike....

UNLESS, you really don't want it to happen. In which case your post is only a way to let yourself off the hook for something you're glad you did anyway.

THOUGH I commend your feeling that you should make it possible to reunite the owner with his bike, I don't think you should let him/her have it without reimbursing you for every penny you spent on it, and maybe a few extra bucks to boot. You saved their bike from being sold to some other schmo who wouldn't have posted that add. You shouldn't have to pay for their lack of vigilance in caring for their bike.

IF you really want to be a do-gooder. Describe the bike OR the building (not necessarily both). Reserve enough info to feel comfortable that you can recognize a charlatan, but also give the owner a fair chance at recognizing the bike and/or building from your posting. Then cross your fingers and pray that you'll get to pass it on to your grandchildren, or sell it ridiculously cheap at a yard sale when you're 80....

OR, you can forget all this virtue crap and just chalk it up to finders keepers and remember that the human race began as a pack of nomads and the concept of ownership (land or otherwise) is well overblown in our culture, and is to a certain extent the key defining aspect of our neurosis. The guilt is part of the cycle.

So some scumbag thieved my beloved bike yesterday, ganked it right off of my porch.

While no great bike I had owned it for 10 years and loved the daylights out of it. I am reasonably sure it was ripped off to be scraped but what is the harm in trying right?

The bike, if in one piece, should be easy to spot due to the fact it was bright orange and the only on that color I had seen. It had the distinctive GT 'Triple Triangle' frame and rigid fork with a rack and saddle bag. The seat and post are secured with a cable around the frame of the bike and there should still be a U-lock on it as they broke my porch to get it.

For sale- a vintage Miyata Ninety (made in Japan) that has been converted to a single speed / fixed road bicycle. It is perfect for the urban rider who can ride a bicycle that is 56 cm. It has been cleaned, tuned up, and it is ready to ride. This bicycle is Shimano equipped and has a front brake, triple-butted steel tubing, toe clips with new straps, new tape has been put on the bars, new racing saddle, and it has a polished chrome fork. The bicycle comes with a Weinmann wheelset. There is a pretty engraving on the each side of the drop-bars . One side says Winipista Japan on it, and the other side I suspect says the same in Japanese. Shiny blue paint job on the frame. This helmet was bought for me by some friends when I started learning how to skateboard. I guess it was always just too much flare for my liking so here it is for sale. It is a proper helmet and its pretty dazzling. It is really soft and well padded and as a size medium it seems to be able to fit nearly any head size. This helmet is covered in a velvety black with a red haired mohawk. The chin strap is adjustable and is really well padded. I didn't use it much but when I did have it on it was very comfortable.

Selling my flip/flop set. Both wheels are true, no wobbles, flat spots or anything. They are both machined for brakes. Rear wheel is a 32 spoke Velocity Deep V (dark metallic green - looks black at night) laced to a Suzue high flange hub with a 16t Shimano freewheel on one side and a 16 fixed cog with Formula lock ring on the other side. Front wheel is a nice black 32 spoke alloy 700c (I forget which brand, the sticker came off) laced to a matching Suzue high flange hub. Both wheels are bolt-ons. Tires and tubes are nearly new, maybe 50 miles on them, Michelin Dynamic 700x23C.

So here's the deal. I came home last night to the neighboring building's janitor / engineer throwing out bikes. Several. They were cutting / jacking open locks after giving people 30 days notice about removing items so they could paint the floor in the utility area. Most of them were crap, but when I asked he said there was one nice one left.

**Before anyone rails me, I know this is true. I saw the buckets of paint and a few of the notices / dates on the notices.**

In any case, there was....let's just say a VERY nice bike. The janitor said he'd sell it to me and in a moment of weakness, I bought it.

To my defense:
* the janitor said it had been there for a year and never moved (it was in fact covered in a layer of dust so this is believable)
* you did NOT respond to any of the three notices threatening to throw out this beautiful bike
* I did pay a reasonable amount for it, a few hundred in fact (still a deal).
* I was drunk.
* and....well, I posting here in an effort to get in back to you and save my karma. but mostly because it's the right thing to do.

So today I'm have serious pangs of guilt. It's a nice bike. If on the off chance you didn't just move away and forget this beauty, I'm sure you want it back.

Tell me the make & model, the street it was on and the only noticeable defect and it's yours. I'll write off the money I spent as penance for doing something stupid and arguably immoral.

I really hope you're some rich college student that just left your bike and isn't too worried about it. But, if not. Here you go. Claim it. Save my karma. Please.

The bike is it great condition. I was the only owner and it's always been kept indoors. I last had it tuned up two summers ago and probably haven't put 50 miles on it since then. I'm including a Specialized brand speedometer but it probably needs a new battery.

Feather light track speedster. 52 cm aluminum Cannondale Track bike. All compontents are Dura-ace except for the front wheel/hub is Spynegy Spox with yellow spokes and looks awesome! There is no front tire in the photo, but there is one, i just haven't got a chance to put it on. There are hardly any scratches on the bike at all.
This bike is worth way more than $400 but I'm posting it for a computer illiterate friend who needs the money. He is more into road cycling and doesn't want a track bike anymore, and could use the cash.

Yes, apparently montgomery ward made bikes too! There is a pretty little simple decal on the front of the bike that says montgomery ward. This bike is old but still in great shape. I rode it over 20 miles a few weekends ago and about 5 miles from home I had to refill the back tire. It has a slow leak and I think the bearings in the crank could also use some grease. All it needs is a little tune up and you're good to go. Does have the usual signs of cosmetic rust. Very comfortable set up and seat.

Here we have the remains of my 21" 1998 Specialized Rockhopper FS (the FS is long gone) A1 (aluminum) Comp. Purchased new at R&M Cycles (Springfield IL) in 1999, my former daily rider has since been retired. Now it could be yours!

All components except the crank, bottle cage & seatpost clamp have been removed. The included Truvativ crank has a hairline fracture on the drive side.
