The personal essay continues to thrive as a genre and it affirms that individual experience deserves to be articulated, explored, and celebrated. This course begins by studying, for inspiration and instruction, methods used by the best personal essayists, then focuses on the students' own personal pieces. Useful "toolbox" strategies, such as active voice, sentence structure and variety, the use of metaphor, and other figures of speech are explored as participants work on drafts and revisions of their essays. No prior writing experience is necessary; all students interested in learning how to frame their personal experiences into artful prose are welcome. Enrollment limited to 15 students. $55 nonrefundable.
Instructor: Rochelle Shapiro , MA, writer and editor whose work has appeared in Newsweek and The New York Times, among other publications. Ms. Shapiro's novel Miriam the Medium (Simon and Schuster) was nominated for the Harold U. Ribelow Award in fiction, and is selling in Holland, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. Her essay, "Eulogy for My Mother," won the Branden Memorial Award.
