ICHV Student Voices Program Manager – Part Time

ICHV:

For over 35 years, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence (ICHV) has been a leader among state gun violence prevention groups. ICHV is the oldest, largest and most active statewide organization in the country dedicated specifically to reducing death and injury caused by easy accessibility to firearms. ICHV achieves its mission through public education and awareness programs, and by acting as an information source to community groups, activists, policymakers, the media and other concerned citizens and organizations.

ICHV has created many programs to accomplish its goals of educating the public and advocating for effective policy on gun violence prevention. Each year, ICHV conducts the Student Voices Contest which provides students in grades 1-12 throughout the state the opportunity to raise their voices about gun violence.


Position Description:

The Program Manager will work in conjunction with the ICHV Staff and Board, as well as the Student Voices Contest Committee to develop a comprehensive classroom curriculum that promotes non-violence and engages students in a safe and open dialogue about gun violence. The Program Manager will serve as the primary classroom representative for the Student Voices contest. The manager will bring the curriculum to schools and students statewide. The manager will evaluate the curriculum on an ongoing basis in order to determine best practices for the Student Voices Program. In addition the Program Manager will create and implement a plan to increase participation in the Student Voices Contest. The manager will seek out, establish and maintain relationships with schools, principals and teachers throughout Illinois. The manager will promote the contest throughout the year at various events and venues as to be determined by the manager, the Contest Committee, and the Director of Community Affairs. Additionally, the Program Manager will assist ICHV staff with other Student Voices Contest related activities, such as mailings, the Awards Assembly and entry judging. This is a part time position and hours are relative to the timing in the contest cycle (i.e. August – January are busier than February – June) The Program Manger reports directly to the Director of Community Affairs and the Executive Director of ICHV.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a creative, detail-oriented professional with exceptional writing, verbal, research, presentation and organizational skills. Bachelors Degree required Masters Degree is a plus. Three or more years of experience in working with children, teaching, or curriculum development is essential. The ability to travel throughout Illinois is mandatory. Knowledge of the issue as well as a strong commitment to the ICHV mission is necessary. This is a part time contract position. Hours are flexible with regard to many of the responsibilities. This position begins January 1, 2010 and ends December 31, 2010, candidates MUST be able to commit themselves to the full year for consideration.

Responsibilities:

This position requires focused interaction with students in a classroom setting, as well as curriculum development and working with teachers on curriculum implementation. The Program Manager will have the following specific responsibilities:

- Create and implement a plan to increase participation in the Student Voices Contest throughout the State of Illinois

- Program Manager will work with the ICHV Staff and Board, and the Student Voices Contest Committee to develop a comprehensive classroom curriculum that promotes non-violence and engages students in a safe and open dialogue about gun violence.

- Coach teachers and school administrators on how to incorporate the Student Voices Program Curriculum into classrooms

- Create evaluation tools for the program

- Work in conjunction with ICHV staff on other Student Voices Contest related activities, Planning of the Awards Assembly and entry judging.



Compensation:

Hourly compensation will be determined based on experience with a possible year-end bonus. A competitive travel per-diem is provided for overnight travel, as well as reimbursement for travel expenses.
