AmeriCorps Positions at Asian Human Services

Are you a community-minded person interested in making a one year commitment to social service in the Chicago area? Asian Human Services on Chicago’s north side is now inviting applications for its AmeriCorps Program which will begin in late August, 2008. This is an opportunity for a recent college graduate or other community member to gain a year of experience in volunteering, receive a stipend of up to $14,000, health insurance and other benefits, and at the end of the term of service, receive an educational award up to $4,725 that can be used to help pay for educational expenses.

Asian Human Services serves more than 12,000 low-income people per year. Our largest ethnic population is Asian, but we also serve many Hispanics, Eastern Europeans, Africans and native-born Americans. We are seeking AmeriCorps members for several programs at AHS: Passages Charter School, the AHS Family Health Center, the Literacy Education for Adults and Families (LEAF) Program, and Teen Reach. We anticipate filling the following full time positions starting in August, 2008. Instructions for applying follow these position descriptions.

WIA YOUTH PROGRAM SITE SUPERVISOR, EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
- Supervise and manage the Loyola Work-Study students that are responsible for tutoring our high school aged youth.
- Ensure that the WIA schedule is adhered to by work-study students and youth.
- Plan educational and recreational activities for youth (trips to local universities, colleges, museums, amusement parks, etc).
- Ensure data entry takes place in E-cornerstone daily.
- Occasional evening hours may be required (6PM-8PM).

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM ASSISTANT, LEAF PROGRAM
Primary Responsibilities:
- Tutor 1st – 5th grade children with homework, reading, and other activities.
Assist program coordinator in planning academic goals for enrolled children, especially in reading and math.
Organize book clubs, children’s computer classes, and other educational activities.
- Help to run summer camp for school-age children in June and July, 2009.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Assist early childhood teachers in daily supervision of preschool children; help plan daily activities for early childhood program.
- Tutor non-native adult English speakers enrolled in ESL classes; assist in the computer lab during ESL and Computer Literacy classes; teach small beginning ESL or Computer Literacy classes; substitute for instructors when they are absent.

ADULT EDUCATION & FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM ASSISTANT, LEAF PROGRAM
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist head teacher in day to day supervision of children and lesson planning for the Early Childhood Education program
- Tutor non-native adult English speakers enrolled in ESL classes; lab assistant for ESL and Computer Literacy classes; teach small beginning ESL or Computer Literacy classes; substitute for instructors when they are absent.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Tutor the children in the LEAF After School Program by helping them with their homework, reading, and other activities on assigned days.

INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT STAFF, PASSAGES CHARTER SCHOOL (3 AVAILABLE POSITIONS)
- Work in classrooms with small groups of students or individuals as directed by the classroom teacher
- Support special education teacher with in class support of students with IEPs
- Work in the before and/or after school program
- Provide recess/lunchroom supervision
- Provide class coverage on a rotating basis as needed

INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT STAFF - MEDIA AND LIBRARY, PASSAGES CHARTER SCHOOL
- Work with media teacher to plan and co-teach media activities to all grades
- Provide technology support to classroom teachers
- Assist in library duties (cataloging, check out/in)
- Work in the before and/or after school program
- Provide recess/lunchroom supervision
- Provide class coverage on a rotating basis as needed

PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATOR & RESEARCH ASSISTANT, FAMILY HEALTH CENTER
- Develop and implement comprehensive culturally appropriate curricula for community health education and outreach programs
- Develop and undertake needs assessment surveys of various client communities.
- Organize and conduct workshops and educate the community about the nature of disease, preventative strategies and treatment options available to combat different chronic diseases.
- Identify and coordinate with ethnic, social service, community, health, funding sources and government organizations on public health initiatives.

COMPUTER ASSISTANT & SUPPORT TECHNICIAN, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
- Work alongside the Chief Information Officer to provide phone support for Microsoft Office and answer computer questions.
- Provide remote assistance for agency staff as well as quarterly MS Office in-service for agency staff.
- Assist in and occasionally teach basic computer courses for agency clients.
- Knowledge of MS Office required. Training is provided.
