Music Business Spring Internship (Bridgeport - Chicago)

Spring Internship Positions Available – You can be an Entrepreneurial Ninja in the Music Business

Everyone will want to hire you.

Invisible Records / Tour:Smart is looking for interns. Being our intern is hard work. You’ll be drained at the end of the day. There will be grunt work. BUT, in return, you’ll be working on the front line of everything we do…which is probably not what you think. Our focus is Tour:Smart – And Break the Band, a book written by label owner Martin Atkins. If you don’t know this guy, take a moment for a quick Wikipedia search – he’s done it all, and more.

We’re routing tours, consulting with bands, speaking at conferences, planning seminars, writing blogs, and creating content for all of it. (Did I mention we also produce, direct, and edit documentaries, one of which just won best feature length documentary at CIMM Fest 2009?) In addition to all of that, we have our own recording studio, our own screen printing press, and of course, our record label. Will live and die on D.I.Y. mentality. We will teach you everything we know.

Open positions:
•Interactive media intern – design our website, maintain our blogs, interact on our community sites (if you know WordPress, send us your resume right now!)
• Editorial / Community intern – write our blogs and develop relationships with other Music Industry 2.0 sites. Make friends with our community members and build our fanbase.
• Booking intern (two positions) – work with our team to pitch and coordinate leads for our events (Tour:Smart seminars, CD release parties, gallery showings), route the tour, negotiate fees, coordinate with hosting venues, and manage tour merchandise sales. We do two to three events/day when we’re on the road. If you can handle this, you can handle just about anything.
• Promotions intern (two positions) – lead our street team, promote our events, create crazy marketing stunts that get us in Rolling Stone.
• Studio intern – organize our studio, create a sound library, master our albums, manage our CD duplication clients, and get our songs online. Diligence and organization are a must for this position.
• Marketing intern – develop new products, get them on our website, sell them to our fans.
• Organizational guru intern – everything else. Manage our database, maintain processes and documentation, create tour itineraries, manage calendars, and whatever else you can think of! If you like to color code everything and the people at the Container Store know you by name, this is made for you.

The right candidate is:
• Smart, passionate, organized, web-literate, and a self-starter
• Not above grunt work (we’ve all mopped the floors)
• Strong writing and communication skills, fluent in MS Office
• THIS IS AN UNPAID, PART-TIME INTERNSHIP. We can't pay you, but we'd be delighted to help you get college credit.
• We’re looking for fall interns who can dedicate 15-30 hours/week.

What other interns have said:
“I learned more in three days interning at Invisible overhearing Martin's phone conversations than I did in an entire semester of college. – Samantha Dane, Columbia College Chicago.

“[Martin Atkins] prepared me for this industry in a single semester.” – Michelle Cho, PETA

What are interns are most proud of (in their own words)
“Although I didn't get everything I wanted done, I'm proud to have been an asset to the team. There's so much potential for all the businesses and it would have been nice to see them bloom on my watch, but the work I did is setting a precedent for the future.”

“Booking an entire UK tour that took place in two foreign countries - holy shit, I can't believe I did that and that it went well (for the most part).”

“Getting the websites looking better and starting the process of getting the label organized.”

“I am most proud that Martin has given me the opportunity to be partially in control of publishing. We have created a contract where I feel personally responsible for the success of that portion of the company. I love that he saw my passion for this aspect of the industry and presented me with an opportunity that I’m sure many other internships would not have given me.”

“Learning new software and services that I was not familiar with before (ShipWorks, Central Desktop, SalesForce, gmail organization techniques, QuickBooks Online), and more importantly getting to put that on my resume. I'm most proud of working on the creation of profit and loss reports, creating a new chart of accounts and learning about the expenses and revenues of a small company.”

“The ability to play with promotion ideas and see what worked out best. I appreciated the freedom and the trust within the company to use what I thought would work to work.”

“I'm pretty excited about the bond with I made with the invisible staff and intern staff. All the people I've met I'm hoping to keep in touch with and possibly work with in the future of my career.”

How to apply:
Read about Tour:Smart and Martin Atkins (www.tstouring.com / www.invisiblerecords.com). If you love what we do, send an email with subject line: Internship T124 to HR@invisiblerecords.com. Include your cover letter (address why you want to intern for us) and your resume. Remember, this is an UNPAID INTERNSHIP 15 – 30 hours/week beginning January 2010 and ending May 2010.

Style Matters is looking for two incredibly talented DJs to join our team in 2010. Take a look around our site at http://www.stylemattersdjs.com (Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/style-matters-chicago) and get in touch if you think you're the person for the job. In 2009, we contracted well over 200 private events, and we're shooting for 300 in 2010. While weddings are the primary focus, we also spin for corporate events, art openings, fashion shows, fundraisers, etc. We're looking for a very specific kind of DJ, and these are the requirements:

- You must be obsessed with good music, and know about a variety of different genres. If you're not constantly buying music and going to shows, please stop reading here.
- You must have at least five years of experience of DJing out.
- You must be familiar with Serato (turntable/vinyl DJs preferred)
- You must be personable, responsible, easy going, and able to take charge when the situation calls for it.
- You must be able to beat match...well.
- You must have a car.
- You must be a risk taker.
- You must be willing to work late nights, primarily weekends.
- You must be able to lift heavy equipment.
- You must be hungry as hell to rock the spot, and not looking to make a quick buck.

Still with us? Good. Here's what we need from you. Send an email to info@stylemattersdjs.com with the following:

- Your full name, date of birth, contact info, and 2 to 4 paragraphs about your experience as a DJ and why you think you'd be a good addition to to the Style Matters family. A picture is encouraged, but not required.
- A download link (sendspace, megaupload, etc.) to a A DJ mix at least 30 minutes long. The mix can be any style, but mixes that include a variety of party rockers will be favored.

We will be taking applicants until late January, but we are only looking for two new DJs, so the sooner you get in touch, the better chance you have. Five people will be called in to interview, and of those five, two will be offered a position with pay starting at $70/hour. Our events have a five hour minimum, and our busy season starts in late March/early April and goes through early December. Please do not call us, we will respond to every email we receive to let you know that we got all of your information.

Good luck, we're eager to hear from you.

Can you wear many hats?

Are you someone who can manage details and multitask? Can anticipate what people need before they know they need it? Can you always be pleasant on the phone, even when you have thirty other things to do? Do you know how to work basic graphic design functions in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop?

Be the person who makes it all work out for everyone. Connect people with the perfect cool stuff for their event or project. Fix the art. Handle the details. See it through. Ask the right questions, check your work and get it right. Master the mechanics. Be the person everyone can rely on.

This position is 60% sales support and 40% graphic arts.

To help us, you must already be able to:

1.	Know the difference between a jpg and an eps file.
2.	Know the difference between four color process vs spot color printing with PMS inks.
3.	Send an email with attachments.
4.	Negotiate Windows files and folders without basic instruction.
5.	Complete forms, especially electronic forms, in accurate, verified detail.
6.	Find your way around the Internet without basic instruction.
7.	Handle basic math, especially percentages, such that you can handle variable pricing with guidance.
8.	After an introduction, you need to be able to independently handle all office machines: postage, fax, computers & printers, scanners, phone system, etc.
9.	Remember names, conversations, steps in a process.
10.	Learn quickly and follow instructions.
11.	Laugh out loud.

1.	Microsoft office suite (especially Outlook, Word, and Excel.)
3.	Adobe Illustrator (especially resizing logos, adding copy, and being able to identify and manipulate vector art. We’d be delighted if you can redraw logos and create original art.)
4.	QuickBooks (this is NOT an accounting position, but we do write up sales orders and purchase orders in QuickBooks. We will train the right candidate.)

You must be able to function best in an environment where interruptions are your day, stuff goes wrong, and everything needs to be taken care of right now. Better love the phone, and take great notes. There’s only a few of us and sometimes there will only be you. Accuracy, reliability and yes, even spelling count and the goal “Everybody Happy” is not just realistic, but fundamental.

We are a promotional products distributor with 18 years of connecting people with the right stuff: balloons, shirts, golf balls, magnets, pink squeezable foam brains with their logo on it. We manage the process from start to finish, from product choice and the preparation of artwork, to placing the order, managing the proof process, and making sure it ends up in the right place at the right time with no billing surprises.

We know what we’re doing and we just want everybody happy. We need one more person who’s into that, and up to it.

Venus Zine is the go to source for trendsetting women in music, art, film, fashion, and culture. Venuszine.com is the daily updated companion to the quarterly, internationally circulated magazine. Venus Zine and venuszine.com feature interviews with legendary artists (Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, and Kim Deal) in addition to edgy and up-and-coming musicians, designers, writers, actresses, and entrepreneurs. Venus Zine finds what's next, before it turns mainstream. Recent examples include: M.I.A, Sarah Silverman, Ximena Sarinana, Florence & The Machines, Ida Maria, artist Dina Goldstein, and many more.

Job Requirements: Venus Holdings is looking for a Venus-minded person with an impeccable understanding of the emerging pop culture scene. Compensation is commensurate with a quarterly print and daily online publication. You'll do this for the love of Venus Zine and the tremendous exposure and opportunity, not to get rich quick.

The main logo will appear in part on the left side of the logo bar.
Ruth is part of the brand, so her name has to appear close to the logo, however you wish to position it. Including the “.com” is up to you.
REEL Chicago also needs two more logos

• a logo for the REELINK DIRECTORY
• a logo for the FREE CLASSIFIEDS section.

While these two designs may stand on their own, they should have a relationship in some way to the Reel Chicago logo.

How it works:

• Submit 3-5 rough design sketches for each logo you wish to submit.

• The concept chosen for the main, REEL CHICAGO logo will be paid $500 upon its completion and acceptance.

• The concepts chosen for the REELINK DIRECTORY and the FREE CLASSIFIEDS section will each receive an Apple store gift certificate for $150.

• All concepts will require three rounds of proofing before being signed off as complete.

• Final images will be released by the logo creators as works for hire and become the property of Reel Chicago, Inc.

Submit your first round of sketches as .JPEG or PDF files. Include your name, address, phone number and Email address. Send them to ruth@reelchicago.com
PLEASE DO NOT SEND RESUMES, PORTFOLIOS, INFO ABOUT YOUR COMPANY OR DIRECT ME TO YOUR WEBSITE...as they will not be looked at or considered.
YOUR CONCEPT SKETCHES ONLY ...PLEASE.
Allow two weeks (Dec. 15) for first round notification. Final decision will be made Jan. 5, 2010 and you will be notified accordingly.

Senior Art Director Wanted (River North)

It’s crazy how quickly a little good work turns into a LOT of good work. Our small river north agency has been looking ahead to 2010 and, I’ll be honest, we’re starting to sweat a little. So we’re on the prowl for some serious talent. You know you’re getting swamped when “all hands on deck” means the copy guy is selecting photos and sketching layouts (and, trust me, I can’t sketch).

What I’m trying to say is, we need help. Art Director help. Pronto.

Now – before you get too excited and hit reply, let me just tell you a bit more about what you’d be getting yourself into. Gigs like this aren’t exactly for everybody.

First of all, you’ll need experience. Relevant, verifiable art direction experience – cranking out rock-solid marketing concepts, airtight layouts, and wicked designs for clients of all kinds…with flare and efficiency. We’re not talking about the uninspired execution of someone else’s bright ideas. We’re looking for a proven capacity to develop big ideas of your own – coupled, of course, with the discipline and technical skills to pull them off.

Secondly, talent matters. Doing something and doing it WELL are two different things. In other words, your book has to look good…overflowing with fundamentally sound design decisions and evidence of some truly original thinking. By the way, can you write your own headlines, too? Show us those. How’s your production knowledge? Any client-facing experience? Do you have any new media or Flash design skills? Multi-talented generalists will get more consideration here than single-minded specialists, so if you have other skills, don’t be afraid to brag a little.

Third, versatility is critical to success. Our project docket is an all-you-can-eat buffet of pretty much anything you can imagine. Healthy portions of both B2B and B2C for starters, then a steady diet of print, interactive, direct, outdoor, and broadcast. So you’ll definitely need an iron stomach and an appetite for variety, because being an Art Director here is, for lack of a better analogy, like a box of chocolates.

Finally, what motivates you? That’s not a trick question. Think about it.

I’ll tell you what motivates us. Rocking our clients’ worlds with out-of-this-world creative. We’re passionate perfectionists who take an enormous amount of pride in the work we produce. It’s in our DNA to over-deliver. Or perhaps it’s simply because creative types are desperately seeking approval at all times. Whatever’s at the root of it, the bottom line is we need motivated people who can jump right in and be the ball. Unlike at some of the megalithic Michigan Avenue overhead emporiums, there’s no place to get lost in the shuffle or hide out here.

What am I forgetting? Well, naturally you’re going to have a strong knowledge of Quark, PhotoShop and Illustrator, etc. – the essential tools of your trade. And please don’t say you do if you don’t – the skills test catches everyone in the end. Only kidding, of course (as far as you know).

Still with me? Cool. Writers LOVE working with art directors who actually read the copy.

If you’re experienced, talented, versatile, AND motivated, you may just be the help we need. I invite you send your resume and a cover letter stating why we can’t afford to ignore you.
