I have recently moved back to the Chicagoland area after graduating from the Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am a Digidesign Certified Pro Tools Operator and have experience working on both analog consoles, such as the SSL 4000 and Trident 80B, and digital worksurfaces such as the Digidesign D-Control, D-Command, and Control 24.

During my time in Minneapolis some of the projects I worked on were an untitled track for Micky Follansbee(Sign of the Times), a four track live demo for Big Blacks Dance Floor Blues, and assisted on the mixing of a few tracks for Edna�s VD. I am currently working on editing a full-length for Chicago artist Beneathme. Examples of some previous work can be found at myspace.com/kevinfrytz.

Location: I am located on the North side of Chicago, near Northeastern University and Sauganash, 5 minutes from the Eden's Peterson and Foster exits.

What will your drum lesson be like? Each student is unique, so we will spend time determining what direction you (or your parents if you are younger) would like to take. Your ability will also be taken into consideration.

Traditional Approach: This is for the student who wishes to improve in areas of snare drum and fundamentals of "classical" drumming. Grip, hand technique and sound production will be taught. Rudiments will be covered, as well as use of standard drum texts. We can also study mallets as well. I've taught beginners how to hold the sticks, as well as high school students preparing for college auditions. I also have written many etudes and solos for junior high and high school students, which are geared towards preparing the students for their experience in their music programs.

Drumset Approach: I usually divide the lesson into technical exercises (stick control, snare methods) that are applicable to drumset use. An example might be taking a page from a text like Stick Control and creating ways to apply it to the drumset. Many of students will take these ideas and create some of their own. I always tell my students that the best drummers are not only creative on the bandstand, but in the practice room. Most drummers don't get too excited about the idea of hacking out endless pages of snare exercises. I like to take some of that method and quickly show the drummer what can be done.

I've spent a lot of time working out of all the popular drum books. So, we will spend some time using the best of those... Here is a short list of some of the books I've used with my students.

Syncopation -Ted Reed, using the Alan Dawson method.
Future Sounds & The Funky Beat - David Garibaldi.
New Breed - Gary Chester.
The Commandments of R&B Drumming - Zoro

The feel is most definitely bossa, and therefore, only Portuguese lyrics will do! Wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but I figured musicians might care or know someone who does.

The Howlin' Tumbleweeds (myspace.com/howlintumbleweeds)are releasing a full length album around mid-august. It's called "Trouble With The Man Downstairs," and it encompasses a variety of Rhythm & Blues influenced music. Obviously, at this point in the game we are working on the final mixes, and are in need of a particular sound service for one song.

Track 9, a song called "Bucket of Sin," is a country/western tune with a real oldskool Hank Sr. feel. We want to make it sound as such with the help of an old tube radio ALA 1950's - late 60's. We need to find someone who has a radio or speaker of this characteristic, and record a mono projection of the mixed song through this speaker setup. We have the location recorder, microphones, and everything else. However, we are in need of the radio in question, and the ability to run some kind of digital track through the speaker. Whether the routing is done via CD, computer, or by using a low range transmitter, it doesn't really matter. To be honest, a transmitter would be the coolest, but right now we're just looking for the sound of the speaker more than anything.

This same request goes out to anyone who collects vintage speakers, and has something that is heavier on the mid-high end, like a radio might be at this time (although there are some pretty bassy antique radios). We can work to make a variety of situations feasable, I can always deal with the EQ as need be. The recording equipment records to mono, so that's what it needs to be projecting out as. This will become the final mix (plus a small amount of level raise for the master), and your speaker will be featured on the album. We can obviously offer a big thanks, we'll be happy to bring some lunch or dinner by when we do the spot, and, if need be I can offer musicians and artists time in a recording studio I work at, for an exchange. This situation should hopefully work out to be beneficial for either side of the equation, and I think with the right collaboration it shouldn't take too long and produce great results. Get back to me before July 25th, ideally.
