LOCAL COUPLE TO REVEAL PODCASTING SECRETS
AT ARLINGTON HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- A suburban couple who have been podcasting for nearly three years will reveal the secrets of their success at a free meeting of the Chicago Area Podcasters Network at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton Ave.

Every two weeks since 2005, Arlington Heights residents Lisa and Joe Lynn have been chronicling their forays to Chicago-area restaurants, entertainment venues and more on the "Cheap Date Show." They've also expanded into video podcasts; a recent episode documented Lisa's secret family recipe for apple butter.

Podcasts are on-demand Internet audio and video programs that feature music, commentary, comedy, sports and news -- and have exploded in popularity. Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store alone offers more than 100,000 for free download. But you don't need an iPod to enjoy a podcast; in fact, just about any computer will do.

In addition to their long-running "Cheap Date Show" podcast, the Lynns host and produce "Discover Woodfield," a guide to suburban cuisine and activities sponsored by The Woodfield Chicago Northwest Convention Bureau.

"When we began our show in the fall of 2005, we did it just for fun," Joe says. "We never expected the response we received, and every time we hear from a listener in Rio de Janeiro, London or Tokyo, we're amazed at the power and reach of podcasting -- not to mention the fact that people enjoy hearing about restaurants that are halfway around the world!"

One of the topics the couple will discuss is where they get their ideas. However, according to Lisa, there's really no shortage. "Chicago is such a wonderful food and restaurant town, and we're happy to know that we won't run out of subject matter for a long, long time," she says.

Podcasters Network assistant organizer Leigh Hanlon says he's especially looking forward to Lisa and Joe's presentation. "Their podcasts average about 3,000 downloads per episode, which is more than 10 times the average podcast's audience," he says. "These two are doing it right. Whether you're a veteran podcaster or a newbie, you'll learn something of value from Lisa and Joe."

The meeting also will feature advice from other Podcasters Network members on choosing recording equipment, editing programs and hosting services. Digital recorders and microphones used to create podcasts will be displayed, and the meeting will finish off with a question-and-answer period and a drawing for a free copy of "The Business Podcasting Book: Launching, Marketing and Measuring Your Podcast."

The Arlington Heights Memorial Library is located two blocks west of North Arlington Heights Road and one block south of Euclid Avenue, three blocks north of the Arlington Heights Metra station.
