Losing weight for many of us is important to our overall health. However, the way we lose weight may not necessarily be healthy. For example, here is the normal process for losing weight. Something emotional happens that gives you the message that you need to lose weight. An upcoming wedding. A trip to the beach. A class reunion. So, you go on some form of calorie restriction. This causes your body to enter the "Famine Response" where your body hangs on to fat as your last survival energy and begins to break down muscle, which is where over 50% of your weight loss will come from. This causes your metabolism to slow down which makes your body less efficient with your food. At one point, your metabolism will slow down so much, your weight loss will slow down, and even stop. Then, the starvation response happens. You have achieved your goal. You went to the wedding two dress sizes smaller. You walked the beach in Hawaii with only your swimming suit on. The next thing you know, you are standing in front of the fridge at two in the morning finishing the left over spaghetti, the corn from two nights ago and your spouse's cold pizza from a work party. The weight returns faster than it went off. And, that is not the bad news. The bad news is that it comes back as fat slowing your metabolism even more. The next emotional diet is about to begin. Unfortunately, this time, it is going to be harder to get off thanks to a significantly higher percentage of body fat and slower metabolism.
