<description><![CDATA[GENERAL SUMMARY:	Provides project management and editorial oversight of the Academy’s medical and scientific texts.  Maintains direct responsibility in the production of the Academy’s highly visible and prestigious medical and scientific publications, which have a material impact on the Academy’s financial status.<br>
<br>
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:<br>
<br>
Edits or supervises the editing of medical and scientific manuscripts to improve their quality, with emphasis on logic, technical accuracy, organization and presentation of ideas, and stylistic consistency.<br>
<br>
Oversees proofreading of galleys and page proofs and checks same for accuracy and layout. <br>
<br>
Serves as a member of the publications management team; includes assistance in planning the development, production, and marketing of the Academy’s high income producing publications, including solicitation of reviews in appropriate journals. <br>
<br>
Creates and maintains the Academy’s standards for copy editing and submission of manuscripts and other materials.<br>
<br>
Works with production manager in the design of the Academy’s medical/scientific texts.<br>
<br>
Collaborates with the marketing manager to develop the copy component of promotional materials for the Academy’s medical/scientific texts and assists in special marketing projects, courses and professional meetings.<br>
<br>
Under the direction of department director(s), works with appropriate persons in other departments to ensure that the medical component of their publications follows the Academy’s standards of styles and copyediting.<br>
<br>
Complies with all safety policies and practices of the organization and all safety standards associated with this position, including the use of personal protective equipment.  Performs all other job related duties as required or assigned.<br>
<br>
TRAVEL:	Approximately 7 days per year<br>
<br>
QUALIFICATIONS:<br>
Required:  Undergraduate degree in the humanities or in science; progressively responsible project management experience, preferably on large-scale projects, such as books; experience working with medical or allied health professionals in the creation of textbooks; At least 7 years medical or scientific editing experience; Proficiency with Academy’s word processing system. Desired:  Professional/medical society experience.<br>

Responsibilities include assisting with issue planning, conducting interviews, writing news, briefs, compiling product information, copy editing stories and other duties as assigned. <br>
Applicants should have one to three years of newspaper or magazine journalism experience and knowledge of AP style. An interest in furthering a career in journalism is preferred, as the selected candidate will receive the opportunity to grow and develop in a mentoring environment.
