Volunteer with Hospice

Advocate Hospice has opened a new home health location in Park Ridge and is currently seeking volunteers to support our terminally ill patients and their families. Our volunteers will be part of an amazing team who work to provide an improved quality of life for patients near the end of life.

We are currently seeking volunteers who can help out in our office with faxing, filing, phone calls and patient follow-up. You'll work closely with our team of physicians, nurses and other support staff and also have the opportunity to volunteer with patients.

Volunteering with hospice can truly be a life changing experience -- not only for the patients but also for those volunteering their time. All individuals are welcome as volunteers, no matter your background, age or experience. We offer a very flexible commitment, working with your schedule.

Ways You Can Contribute

•Patient Visit Volunteer: Visiting our patients to provide companionship and support through conversation, leisure activities or by being a supportive presence. Also may provide the opportunity for respite, so the caregiver can take some time away to take care of him or herself.

•Special Project Volunteer: Complete special projects at our office, or in the comfort of your home/office. Projects may include: baking cookies, preparing packets or completing craft projects, just to name a few. This is a great option for companies who want to get employees involved in the community or students who want to work as a group!

•Bereavement Volunteer: Provide bereavement support in a variety of ways, such as phone calls, emails, funeral visits or visiting the family.

•Administrative Volunteer: Provide office support through clerical duties, such as data entry, filing, or phone calling.

•Professional Volunteer: Use your education and/or area of expertise to aide our program. Assignments may include: marketing, legal projects, massage therapy, music therapy, pet therapy etc.

How to Get Involved

Advocate Hospice provides volunteer candidates with a comprehensive training program: Philosophy and history or hospice, concepts of death and dying, communication skills, patient care and comfort, grief and bereavement, spiritual and cultural awareness, patient and volunteer safety.

Please call or email Claire Smith, Volunteer Coordinator, for more information.
One Brick (www.onebrick.org) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides support to other local non-profit and community organizations by creating a unique, social and flexible volunteer environment for those interested in making a concrete difference in the community. involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.

Here's a little more information about the upcoming event:

About Chicago Light's Elam Davies Social Service Center:
The Elam Davies Social Service Center (EDSSC) provides services for adults and families who are homeless or living in poverty due to the lack of affordable housing and other issues that result in homelessness. Practicing hospitality to strangers is fundamental to EDSSC's mission. The Center serves more than 10,000 dinners and lunches each year, helps people to find solutions for meeting other basic needs, and accompanies people on their journey to self sufficiency. The Center has served "the least, the last, and the lonely" with dignity and respect since 1983. For more information, visit www.chicagolights.org.

Twice a year, the Elam Davies Social Service Center (EDSSC) reorganizes its clothing closet to accommodate clothing that is suitable for the appropriate season. One Brick volunteers assist with the spring "switchover" so that the closet is fully stocked with appropriate clothes to meet guests' needs.

Other Event Info:
Please wear comfortable clothing (layers recommended). As a safety precaution, all participants are strongly encouraged to wear closed toe shoes. All One Brick volunteers must be 21 years or older, please.

Hi,

I'm working on a bike rental business this summer. I'm looking for other people who are also interested in sharing some of the work and building a bike rental company here in Chicago. We are also looking into renting out Kayaks, Sailboats, and other beach rentals. If this is something that you are interested in email me and we can talk more.

I need help with purchasing used bikes, kayaks, and talking with sailboat owners about renting out their boats. If you have a sailboat and are interested in giving sailing lessons this summer also let me know.

What I'm looking for:
I'm looking for people who can fix bikes, know something about working directly with customers and perhaps have some retail experience or personal training experience such as a lifeguard, sailing instructors... etc... But mainly I'm just looking for someone who enjoys working in a rental type of environment.

About me:
I'm 30, and also a certified US Sailing Instructor. I've taught sailing at a Yacht club on the east coast for about 3 years, I've also been a skiing instructor. I've started several companies in Chicago (not all successful but making some money). I have a marketing company called Fly Market Research (flymarketresearch.com) that I use to do market research both here in Chicago and a few other places. I also work part time with an after school program here in Chicago with children from K-6.

One Brick (www.onebrick.org) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides support to other local non-profit and community organizations by creating a unique, social and flexible volunteer environment for those interested in making a concrete difference in the community. This enables people to get
involved, have an impact and have fun, without the requirements of individual long-term commitments.

When we finish each volunteer project, we gather as a group at a local bar or restaurant for food, drinks and the opportunity to continue to get to know each other. This helps to create a really fun social outlet as part of your volunteer experience.

Here's a little more information about the upcoming event:

About Green Festivals:
Green Festivals centers on social justice, sustainable economies and ecological balance. The Chicago Green Festival will take place on May 17 & 18 and will feature 350 diverse local and national green businesses displaying and selling eco-friendly, fair trade, and sustainable products.
We're looking for volunteers with a very special combination of qualities - dedicated environmentalists with Oscar the Grouch envy. One Brick will be helping to sort trash and recyclables at the 2nd Annual Chicago Green Festival! Yes, you read that right... we'll be culling through each bag recycling (and compost/trash) in the back of the house to make sure we have everything properly sorted. The workcamp project will take place in Social home for high-school students in Plovdiv. The Home is situated on the bank of Maritza river, in the second largest Bulgarian town. This is one of the biggest social establishments in the country providing home and care for more than 140 young people at the age of 5 to 16 years. The socially disadvantaged background of most of the children is considered to be the reason for many problems, which they face in school, in their contacts with other people, in their everyday life. The interaction with other young people from different countries, while working, playing, learning together in the frame of an international volunteer project is essential for their socialization and adaptation. If you want to learn more about the Orphanage and its kids, please visit: www.cadip.org/orphanage

Motivated volunteers from different countries will organize variety of activities for the children and the youngsters in order to optimize their free time during the summer holidays. This will include sports events, gardening, group games, thematic workshops, walks in the city of Plovdiv, visits to different sights and events, etc. Some maintenance and domestic works will be done together with the residents.

Plovdiv is the second largest Bulgarian city, crossroad of different cultures with more than 6000 years history. Ruins from Thracian and Roman times can be seen along with the architectural reserve “Old Plovdiv” and many other sites of historical importance. Volunteers can explore the city and attend the number of cultural and sports events taking place there every summer.

Dates of the project:
July 6 - July 19, 2008
July 20 - August 2, 2008
August 3 - August 16, 2008
August 17 - August 30, 2008

Depending on the availability of free places, a volunteer may take part in more than one project. Keep in mind that a short-term volunteer workcamp is a very dynamic and emotionally intense experience and requires higher personal commitment, somehow comparable to that in middle or long-term volunteering.

To solve this problem, international volunteers are invited to fulfil unfinished syllabus with the students and give further explanations on chapters that are not well understood to ensure a good beginning of the school term in primary and secondary schools. This support is important for the students of rural areas who have less advantages compared to students in towns. Besides, the lessons solve partially the problem with the conspicuous lack of school materials.
Volunteers will work 5 hours daily, mainly in the morning. They can have social and educational activities with the children in the afternoons as well.

This volunteer project consists in teaching primary and secondary school students in basic subjects: French, Maths, English, Physics, German and General knowledge.
Depending on the group, the volunteers may also work with the children in different workshops: modelling workshop, drawing, games, talk, tales and songs, dance and music. In their free time the volunteers can present typical cultural aspects of their country, such as songs, and can participate in community activities, such as sensitizing the local population about hygiene and environmental protection.

Located in the central part of the state of Karnataka, in the southern part of India, Hampi is definitely one of the most interesting travel destinations on the map of India. It is famous for its ruins belonging to the erstwhile medieval Hindu kingdom of Vijaynagar, now declared a World Heritage site. The temples of Hampi, its monolithic sculptures and monuments are breathtaking. The Hindu style of architecture found at Hampi speaks of the splendor of the Vijaynagar Empire.
The volunteer projects in Hampi will concentrate on the protection of the cultural heritage site and on creating awareness among the locals and the tourists. Trees and plants will be planted and grown, thereby converting dry areas into beautiful spots for an eye to rest on. This will include physical work and will require a lot of creativity and motivation from the volunteers to convey the message.

culture while working with the villagers on their land and teaching in
their schools. The work will take place in villages surrounded by
beautiful mountains, isolated from the rest of the world.

Although more
than 90% of Thai nationals belong to the same ethnic group, there are a
few uniquely different hill tribes that stay or move along the Thai
borders with Burma and Laos. One of the most colorful cultures is the
Akha, which can be found in the hills in Northern Thailand. Some of them
have Thai citizenship, some not; they are merely tolerated by the
government and often accused of opium growing and/or forest depletion.
Their relative isolation in the hills has helped to preserve their
particular culture but now also poses a threat as their education level
is low and their sources of information (an understanding of AIDS, for
example) are limited. Together with local NGOs, we are trying to
preserve the Akha culture by helping with practical matters while at the
same time giving young Akha students access to education. In total,
about 50 Akha students live and study at two centers in the city of
Chieng Rai, where they are educated about their cultural heritage. This
is done in an attempt to preserve it by having the next generation bring
their knowledge back to the villages.

the most beautiful locations in Thailand! The influence of the hill
tribes and nearby Burma and China shapes the culture here.

The Isan is also one of the regions of Thailand where traditions are preserved and respected; the Isan culture is influenced by Laos and Lao culture. This influence is represented in their special cooking, handicrafts, music and dance and on the typical Muay Thai Boxing.
The Bo Pan Khan site dates back to the bronze era, when it was a main economic centre of the region due to the rock salt that could be found in the soil. Nowadays, the site is virtually abandoned despite efforts of the Thai government in the 90-ies to attract local tourists. Bo Pan Khan is surrounded by water, which is now filled with riverweed.
Environmental and social is the main work of the project. The volunteers will work at Bo Pan Khan to help cutting the riverweed and cleaning around the area, and planting trees or flowers in the garden. The volunteers will also discover the typical Isan culture and traditions, visiting villagers, farmers and local artisans, helping them in their tasks occasionally.

One Brick provides lots of rewarding projects, that are also fun and social. And signing up for a One Brick event is as easy as the click of a mouse.

If you're looking for a fun way to give back to the community and meet like-minded social volunteers, then One Brick is the way to go. Here's an upcoming event you might be interested in...

About St. Vincent de Paul Center:
Since 1915, St. Vincent de Paul Center has been serving the needs of the working poor of Chicago at the corner of Halsted and Webster. Sponsored by the Daughters of Charity, St. Vincent’s provides much needed programs and services in the areas of child care, social services, outreach to the homeless and services for the elderly.

Get your green thumb out and come help with spring gardening at The St. Vincent de Paul Center. The center’s playgrounds get much use throughout the summertime, so it’s important to get the play areas safe and beautiful for the season ahead! Volunteers will be planting flowers, trimming plants, fertilizing play areas, raking yards, and much more!

Other Event Info:
Come prepared to be put to work! Leave all the details to us, gloves, tools, and water will be ready for you when you arrive. Since we will be working outside, please dress comfortably and in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

All One Brick volunteers must be 21 years or older, please.
