Humorous Copywriter at Groupon (600 W. Chicago Ave.)

Writers Wanted with Bizarre, Imaginative Senses of Humor

Groupon (www.groupon.com) is a locally focused site that features a daily offer on something to experience, eat, drink, or buy in each city. We're a Chicago-based company that's rapidly expanding to more locations. We are exclusively looking for full-time, in-house writers to join the team, which is located in Chicago's River North neighborhood.

Each day's Groupon features a humorous write-up that accompanies the usual details & reviews that readers expect. This is intended to be more entertaining than informative, as we cover the specifics and marketability in the rest of the text. We don't require formal writing experience. We'll work with anyone who can write succinctly, hilariously, and and uniquely.

Here are a few examples to give you an idea of what we think is funny:

http://groupon.thepoint.com/washington-dc/deals/chadwicks-georgetown
http://groupon.thepoint.com/boston/deals/eurostoves
http://groupon.thepoint.com/washington-dc/deals/posh-restaurant
...and this was our April fools deal: http://groupon.thepoint.com/chicago/rent-a-monkey-for-a-week-49

We're inspired by the humor in:

* Various Adult Swim shows (Xavier Renegade Angel, Tim & Eric, etc.)

* The Onion

* Mr. Show

* Woot.com

Compensation is market value.

To apply:

1. See the below, which invites you to add the humor section to a featured Groupon. If you would like some guidance towards style, see this link for some taboos we typically avoid: http://jottit.com/zdb7e/

2. Send along an additional piece you have written, which you feel is a good representation of your humor writing. It can be about anything at all, and in any format. It does not need to be new. We just ask that it is about the length of a Groupon write-up or shorter.

3. Resumes are always nice.

Your submittal can be sent to jobs@groupon.com. Thank you for your interest!

Below are the details for a Groupon deal in Boston. The restaurant, Keys Grille, offered a $35 gift certificate for just $15. Your assignment is to add a humor section at the top of 75-200 words. It should have some very loose relation to some aspect of Keys Grille, but feel free to go off on very strange tangents. Just give us something that makes you laugh when you read it. Be sure to check out the links to examples of old Groupon write-ups, or else be sure to completely ignore them and do what you want.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Add the humor section here.

-----------------------------------------------------------
DETAILS FOR TODAY'S DEAL
With today’s Groupon, $15 gets you $35 worth of food and drink to [Keys Grille](http://www.keysgrille.com/index.htm), located at 585 Chickering Rd. in North Andover (just 25 minutes north of Boston proper, on Route 125). The restaurant’s façade is unassuming, but Keys’ interior and array of extraordinary culinary options won’t disappoint.

Keys Grille serves tasty, homemade Caribbean-inspired fare, including the pan-blackened shrimp (quick seared with lime juice, a special Cajun spice mix, and a Creole mustard sauce), coconut chicken (deep-fried tenders with toasted coconut breading), and sweet-potato-crusted salmon (coated with a shredded sweet-potato-mixture, pan seared, then finished in a wood oven).

Sometimes the best places to eat are those off the beaten path, where the locals flock and everyone feels comfortable enough to eat shirtless. Keys Grille is that place. Four childhood friends started the restaurant with a simple premise: provide the full Caribbean dining experience. Here, Bostonians get amazing island flavors served by a supremely friendly staff.

Don’t miss out on today’s Groupon for an inexpensive tropical vacation—in your mouth.

Reviews

[Wicked Local North Andover](http://www.wickedlocal.com/northandover/archive/x2133873038) said Keys Grille “just may serve the best salmon folks have ever tasted.” Yelpers gave it an average of [4.5 out of five stars](http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-keys-grille-north-andover). Although the reviews are few, they’re enthusiastic:

> * “The decor is cozy and the food is fabulous! A little pricey but not too bad at all. The best part was the customer service I received. Between the two owners who greeted us personally and asked us how our meal was, to our great bubbly & kind waitress, the place was a delight to dine at. Everyone was beyond kind and the food was on point. Will definitely be going there again! – Kate D.
> * “The food was great, the margaritas were super, the waitress could not have been nicer and one of the owners asked how are _[sic]_ meal was as we prepared to leave. We are going back tonight!” – Dave C.

A family who paid Keys Grille an unexpected visit wrote this on [TripAdvisor](http://is.gd/MG0N): “Everything we ordered was delightful.
We started with chips and salsa. The salsa is their own, made with watermelon, corn and black beans, as well as peppers etc. It is fantastic! The sweet potato fries were made in house, and were great. Coconut shrimp also obviously made in house, were perfect! There were a lot of locals filling up the place by the time we left; obviously they are big fans.”

The Internship Program at Imagination Publishing:

Imagination seeks a summer editorial intern. Our internship program is open to both undergraduate college students and graduate students. It will last approximately 12 weeks (with an option to continue for a second 12-week period) and we provide a transportation stipend along with a weekly meal allowance.

Imagination is also on the lookout for talent as we expand and permanent openings become available in editorial, print design, digital media, broadcast, and business development/marketing.

As an intern you’ll get a chance to gain firsthand insight into the creative and business side of the relationship marketing process by working with – and learning from – our 50 talent staffers. You won’t fetch anyone’s coffee but your own.

One of the best things about working here is variety – we have projects and publications in markedly different subject areas, so you’ll be able to explore different topics and audiences. Regular guidance and feedback is built into the internship. Halfway through your time here, you will receive a review to help you identify areas of strength and ways you can grow.

At Imagination, we are passionate about delivering innovative and quality work to our customers. We work hard, and we’re proud of what we create. But we also like to relax and celebrate our accomplishments. Whenever our new business development lands a new account, our president bangs a gong and we grab our champagne glasses and head to the conference room for some bubbly. Throughout the year, we go to baseball games, walk for charity, work out in our private on-site gym, and throw the best annual holiday party in the West Loop.

We know how to work together and how to play together; it’s obvious that there is an energy and camaraderie here that makes us a cohesive team. We hope that you’ll explore internship opportunities with Imagination. After all, how many offices do you know of that have a gong in their foyer?
We will be posting this ad in NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami, LA, San Francisco and Dallas, as well as Paris, Rome. London, Milan & Tokyo. Aside from general style articles, we're interested in articles on age-appropriate dress and what makes your location unique. For instance, what makes women's fashion and style in Chicago unique? According to Details magazine (for men), Chicago style can be described as "Conservative, but dressy" and a well-dressed outfit: "Pinstripe suits with white shirt and a skull-and-bones motif pocket square" (see below for detailed example). For our purposes, style also includes behavior, vacation spots, local entertainment, etc.

This is an excellent opportunity to have your work published and read by people worldwide. At this stage of our development, we seek writers who are both talented and well received by our readers. For this reason, your initial submissions will be used to introduce you to our readers, and will not be compensated. However, if we feel that your a good fit, future articles will be paid for and you may be offered a position as a column writers, etc. For example, our site is about women achieving peace, balance and happiness in their lives. We're not about misery loves company. So, If an article is obviously written by an angry man-basher, it's not likely that it will be accepted.

If you're interested please forward :"Fashion & Style" related articles to fashion@wwnmail.com and "Beauty" articles to beauty@wwnmail.com. By the way, our intended launch date is by July 4th.

Remember, general style/fashion articles (as opposed to local style/fashion) are also welcome. We're also interested in learning about regional and global differences. Just because we're posting in Chicago, doesn't mean that we're not interested in hearing about styles in Wisconsin, New Orleans and Seattle or... Germany, Paris and Mumbai or Sydney Australia.

Check out how Details magazine (for men) describes NYC:

Local Style: Cosmopolitan
Cocktail: Rye Manhattan
Accessory; Barber black wing tips
Getaway: North Fork of Long Island
Gentlemanly Act: Putting the Blackberry away in a restaurant.
