$198. Titled “Persephone” this is an artist proof by Pittsburgh artist Matta Deckard. Signed by Matta D, lower right. She is a feminist artist who specializes in woman themed prints, drawings, and paintings. This woman whose hair has doves on top and flowers, butterflies, and birds throughout. *Maxfield Parrish was an American painter and Illustrator active in the first half of the 20th century. He is known for his distinctive saturated hues and idealized neo-classical imagery. His career spanned fifty years and was wildly successful. He accepted his last commission in the late 1950s. By 1960 his arthritis prevented him from painting, which lead to his death in 1966. The National Museum of American Illustration claims the largest body of his work in any collection, with sixty-nine works by Parrish.

*Tamara de Lempicka was a Polish painter who spent her working life in France and the United States. She is best known for her polished Art Deco portraits of aristocrats and the wealthy, and for her highly stylized paintings of nudes. Following the outbreak of World War II in 1939, she and her husband moved to the United States and she painted celebrity portraits, as well as still-lives and, in the 1960s, some abstract paintings Her work was out of fashion after WWII, but made a comeback in the late 1960s, with the rediscovery of Art Deco. She moved to Mexico in 1974, where she died in 1980.

Most popular of its features were the wonderful full page caricatures of famous men and women of the day, prints that remain Vanity Fair's great legacy. The two most famous artists who worked for Vanity Fair were "Ape" (Carlo Pellegrini) and "Spy" (Leslie Ward), but many other artists provided images for this long running series of delightful caricatures.
