*Iwan Ries & Co. was founded in 1857 just 20 years after the incorporation of Chicago and four years before the Civil War by German immigrant Edward Hoffman in Chicago’s famous Sherman House hotel. At the time it was known as E.Hoffman & Co. Throughout the next 153 years the family business built a reputation as one of the finest tobacco shops in the country. By 1950, Iwan Ties & Co. became a household name among smokers. The company is still in business today and is also the home of The Iwan Ries Lounge, Downtown Chicago’s only BYOB Smoking Lounge.

*Freeman McFarlin Potteries was founded by Gerald McFarlin and Maynard Anthony Freeman in El Monte, California in 1927. McFarlin was the businessman of the duo and Freeman was responsible for completely reinventing their line, changing it from mostly small animal figurines to very large figurines that were sculpted with great detail, movement, and expression. In the late sixties Gerald McFarlin sold his interest in the company and Freeman sold the remainder of the company to International Multifoods in 1972. The El Monte factory closed permanently in 1975 and operations were consolidated at the San Marcos plant. In 1980 Hagen-Renaker bought the San Marcos plant and acquired all of the Freeman-McFarlin Pottery operations. Hagen-Renaker continued to use many of Freeman McFarlin designs and continued to make figurines until the factory closed in 1986.

*In 1934, the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) introduced a new giftware line under the trade name “Kensington”. Kensington was made of an aluminum alloy, overcoming some of the more troubling limitations of pure aluminum. Lurelle Guild was then hired in 1934 to design the entire line of giftware. Lurelle Van Arsdale Guild was an architect, industrial designer, and interior designer. In 1944, Guild was a founding member of the Society of Industrial Designers in New York.

*Rosenthal is a German manufacturer of porcelain and other household goods owned since 2009 by the Italian group Sambonet Paderno Industrie. It was founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria.
Wiinblad was a world famous artist who was appointed artistic director at Rosenthal, Germany in 1960. He is considered one of the most versatile and imaginative artists of our time. The studio division of Rosenthal was developed in 1961. Long before design was in Vogue, Rosenthal had already been working with contemporary artists, designers, and architects. More than 150 artists have designed unique collections for Rosenthal.
*The Ronson lighter company started as The Art Metal Works in 1897 and was formerly based in Somerset, New Jersey as a producer of decorative products such as figurines, table lamps and various home items. It’s founder, Louis V. Aronson invented and patented the world’s first lighter called the Wonder-Lite in 1913. Zippo Manufacturing Company currently owns the related brands in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, and continues to produce Ronson lighters and Ronsonol fuel. Ronson International Limited, located in Northhampton, England, owns the Ronson brand in most other territories throughout the world.

*Pierre Giraudon was born in 1923. After a stay in Canada, he returned to France in 1949 and introduced the technique of resin inclusion casting. He was a well-known biologist and was the first to use products he invented specially for the purpose to encase plants, animals, and other subjects in resin for universities. During the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, he made sculptures, lamp bases, and objects out of colored resin, with and without inclusions. At the same time he was making these personal creations, he was also working for César. Yet he always declined to be called an artist, because he considered himself first and foremost a biologist. He passed away in 2012.
