Up for sale is a beautiful 1975 Bristol 40 sailboat. This boat is a legendary Ted Hood design, known for its overbuilt, blue-water characteristics. The boat is currently located near Chicago, and has been on the Great Lakes all its life. It has a large full keel, keel hung rudder ad heavy displacement- making it truly blue-water worthy.
The boat is light on modern electronics, but has everything necessary to sail today. A working wind indicator, and fairly new Garmin chart plotter. The boat also comes with quite a few sails. On the furler is a huge Genoa in great condition. It has been upgraded recently with (3) Lewmar Self-tailing winches as well as (2) Lewmar non-self-tailing winches. There is an extra main sail, jib, and a symmetrical spinnaker. The interior is in great shape with beautiful woodwork you don’t find on a modern boat in this price range. It has a large v-berth, a setee, and additional seating which can pull out into a bed - enough to sleep 5/6 very comfortably. We loved the huge wet head equipped with hot water for showers. The kitchen is well equipped with a nice gimbled gas stove. I recently replaced all the water lines as well as a change of the fuel filters. The boat has a Westerbeke 4-91 which has run extremely reliably and efficiently for us.
We purchased the boat fairly recently, with the goal of modernizing and making the voyage south to use as a live aboard in the Caribbean and beyond someday. We sailed it from Detroit to Chicago, and it did fantastic in all kinds of conditions. We are listing as we’ve realized we might not have the time or means to use her as a live aboard for a long while, and hope to find someone as excited as we were to use her for her intended purpose.
Winter storage is covered for the 2025/2026 season.
Overall, this is a beautiful and safe boat meant for someone that has more time to cruise her on the open water than us. Reach out with any questions.
