A figurative mortar in wood depicting a standing male figure holding a shield, with inlays of shell, coral and turquoise, standing on a round base with flexed legs and hunched shoulders, the face is of Cubist form with large protruding triangular nose, oval eyes and oval mouth, all with shell inlay, a round band a top head with round inlay work which supports a conical bowl with rectangular inlays. Mortars were used by the shaman and healers of a village to grind herbs for medicinal purposes. Wood has an overall dry and uniform blonde patina. Please note statue is missing a piece of inlay around bowl.
