This Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace store display was made for the old Tower Records on Lincoln Ave., over by the zoo. This is a beautiful hand-made piece. Someone spent a lot of time on it. The figures are all made with little thin pieces of vinyl (or something similar - it's almost like those old "color forms" toys), pasted onto foam-core cut-outs. Every wrinkle you see on Qui-Gon's pants, every detail in Padme's dress, every mole on Obi-Wan's face, every line of detail on the battle droid, etc., is a separate little piece of vinyl. This must have taken a few hundred hours to make, and there is only one of them in the world. This one.
Each of the characters is a separate piece attached to the backdrop, and fortunately most of them are in good condition. The character cut-outs were made of various thicknesses to give the piece more of a three-dimensional feel, and some of them were attached to stiff wire to make them pop out toward the viewer even more. Watto and the Battle Droid / STAP are meant to be attached to the two pieces of wire that can be seen sticking out under the "R" in "Star" and the "A" in Wars". There are also two pod racer engines; I am not sure where those go and the rest of the pod was never included (including when it was hanging in the store; I guess the person who made this didn't realize that the engines were part of something bigger).
At the time I was a huge Star Wars collector, so I talked the store into selling me this treasure when the Ep.1 promotion was over. I'm the original and only owner since it was taken off public display more than 24 years ago.
Unfortunately, since it was not really meant to be saved indefinitely, the store didn't take great care of it. This piece will need some restoration; please see the photos. The back side is a mess; it was glued to a wall of the Tower Records store and later pulled off. In that process a crease was made in the overall piece, running from under the "W" in "Wars" to near the last "e" in Episode" (near Qui-Gon's boot in the photo). There is also general wear around the edges of the piece.
MUST PICK UP in West Rogers, near Pratt and Western. Shipping this thing would be a real pain, so I'm limiting my audience here to Chicagoland locals. Hence, you'll get a great deal. I did some research with some fairly well-known Star Wars store display collectors and found a price that seems more than fair, including taking the condition of the piece into account. Thanks for looking.
