Freelance Web Developer Needed (Calm, Small Social App MVP) (Chicago)

I’m working on a small, intentionally simple social web app and could use help from an experienced developer to get an MVP into a clean, stable place.
This is not a hype-driven startup and not a growth-at-all-costs product. The app is text-heavy, calm, and deliberately minimal — more early-web than modern social media.
The stack (current / preferred)
• Next.js (App Router)
• Supabase (auth, database)
• Deployed on Vercel
• Web-first (mobile-friendly), no native apps yet
What I’m looking for help with
• Reviewing and stabilizing an early codebase
• Implementing a few core features cleanly (auth flows, simple relational data, basic UI wiring)
• Helping me avoid bad architectural decisions early
• Keeping things simple and readable (this is important)
What I’m not looking for
• Startup hype
• “Let’s add virality”
• Overengineering
• A cofounder or equity conversation (at least right now)
Ideal fit
You might be a good fit if:
• You’ve built small-to-mid web apps before
• You’re comfortable working in a constrained, opinionated product
• You care about clarity and restraint as much as cleverness
• You’re fine executing against a defined product direction
Engagement details
• Freelance / contract
• Hourly or short fixed-scope contract (open to discussing)
• Remote
• I’ll provide clear tasks and priorities
• NDA + work-for-hire agreement required
If this sounds interesting, please send:
• A short intro
• A couple examples of relevant work (especially simple or text-heavy apps)
• Your preferred rate and availability
Thanks — looking forward to working with someone thoughtful and grounded.
Ps I have no idea really what this means (I asked chat gpt for help writing the post). This is why I need help. Also no assholes please.
Just for fun, please put your favorite band in your email to be considered.
