Don Shoemaker was a one-of-a-kind mid century modern furniture designer. Born in Nebraska and educated at the Art Institute in Chicago, he moved to Mexico soon after and started a furniture factory, Senal, in the late 1950's. Instead of following the German and Danish mid century styling leads, Shoemaker designed and produced modern interpretations of traditional Mexican furniture and furnishings.
His most famous design, the Sling Swinger chair - model F-23, took the Campeche chair and merged it with organic curved forms. This example is made out of highly-figured cueramo wood, an exotic Mexican hardwood similar to rosewood. The chair concept can best be described as an inverted rocking chair. The base and frame are fixed, while the seat is connected only to the leather strap backrest and hinged at the side frames, allowing the seat to swing back and forth as desired.
The chair is in very good shape for its age. The heavy solid wood frame is in excellent condition both structurally and finish. The thin wood chips used to lock the wood pegs in place are long gone. The black leather sling backrest has developed a nice worn patina, and has many years of life left in it. The black leather seat cushion has more wear and should probably be replaced/repaired sooner. As the seat cushion is original, I will leave it to the buyer to make any improvements here.
Dimensions are 31" wide by 30" deep by 31" high, with a seat height of 17". The chair retains its original Senal label.
