These iconic Danish Modern dining chairs were designed in 1956 by Erik Buck, and first exhibited at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition in 1957. The vast majority of examples out there today (>95%) were later production by the factory, Oddense Maskinsnedkeri (OD Mobler). This set of 2 armchairs (model PD-7A) and 7 side chairs (PD-7) were earlier low-volume cabinetmaker production by Povl Dinesen.
The signature design feature is the "floating" appearance created by locating the support points for the seat away from the edges and hidden underneath. The cantilevered edges for the cushioned seat flex slightly when seated for increased comfort. The curved cushioned backrests compliment the seat both visually and for comfort.
The teak frames are all in good condition and have acquired a warm patina over the years. There are the usual scratches, marks, and small dents that are common in vintage furniture and are a testament to their everyday use. Eight of the chairs have foil Povl Dinesen labels.
Eight of the chairs retain their original black, vegetable-tanned leather seats and backrests. The leather is in very good condition for it's age with 1 larger backrest tear and 1 smaller seat rip on different chairs. As original leather adds value to mid-century furniture, all attempts should be made to keep it on this set. One armchair has been reupholstered in a black matte leather-like vinyl to match the other chairs.
Dimensions are:
armchairs - 24" wide x 19" deep x 31.5" high, seat height is 16.5" in the middle
side chairs - 20" wide x 19" deep x 31.5" high, seat height is 16.5" in the middle
While a set of 9 chairs allows for a table placement of 8 with a spare, I would consider selling this as a set of 8: either 2 arm / 6 side, or 1 arm / 7 side.
Very few examples of these Povl Dinesen chairs have surfaced for sale in the secondary markets over the years. This set of 9 is the largest I have ever seen, either in archived listings or in vintage photographs.
