I am a math, physics, and test-taking/study skills tutor for high school and college. See below for a list of subjects I can help with.
I graduated in 2015 with degrees in Mathematics and Physics from UCSB and am quite familiar with most undergraduate material in both math and physics and took many graduate courses as well. I have also taken educational psychology courses as I am very interested in the human side of learning. I have been a tutor for over a decade in various settings, a substitute teacher for half of that time, and have taught several GRE preparation courses. I’ll return to school myself this fall to acquire my teaching credential in physics.
I cater to individual styles and backgrounds, focusing on the type of learning each student is aiming for. Generally, I emphasize critical thinking and intuitive understanding of key concepts, with examples and exercises as a means to that end. We can work from specific problems or questions that you bring, or you can let me know the topic of interest and I’ll get us going from there.
I try to maintain the most important elements of in-person tutoring, while incorporating the advantages of working with a computer. We work on a digital whiteboard, drawing, graphing, and writing while we talk. I send the notes after each session. To improve the tutoring experience, we may use several programs on my computer, including:
- Paint for our digital whiteboard, where we draw and cut-and-paste other material
- LyX for formatting math text
- Mathematica for symbolic computation and visualizations (graphing and such)
- Google Chrome to search ideas, definitions, images, etc.
