Up for grabs is a player grade 1966 D-28 being sold as-is. It has been owned by one family since leaving the factory and came into my possession after recently buying it from a woman who inherited the guitar from her father, a bluegrass journeyman who used it to session with acts such as Stan Dudley & Bluegrass I.
The guitar was well-loved with honest play wear typical of a mid-sixties D-28, but nothing seems to be unoriginal, including the bridge, bridge plate and tuners. It has not been refinished and appears to have no overspray.
The guitar is completely playable as-is and has the classic Brazilian Rosewood shimmer, but at some point within the next year or so will require a neck reset, refret, and bridge reglue.
I’ve priced this guitar to move. Several reputable luthiers, including Third Coast Guitar and Brothers in PA, have inspected the guitar and given me realistic quotes in the $13-1400 area for all the work needed to make this guitar perfect (prospective invoice provided in pictures). Nonetheless, even with the repair bill, you would be below market for comparable vintage D-28s and you would know exactly what you’re getting.
