We all know someone who has been affected by cardiovascular (CV) disease like Heart Attack, Stroke, Elevated Cholesterol, or High Blood Pressure. If our country did not do research to support new drug discovery to address CV disease where would our society be? As a Clinical Pharmacist and a researcher I support the efforts of new drug discovery by working with Pharmaceutical companies and Physicians who share this interest. To that end, I would like to address matters of the heart. It's really important as we all approach our seasoned future with the awareness that we have to protect our heart as much as possible even down to the fatty foods that we eat, smoking, and increased stress. So, what am I alluding to? Cardiovascular life style modifications should be considered especially if you have had a prior heart attack, or stroke. It is still important to follow a healthy cardiovascular life style even if you do not fall in to this category.
Some of the latest studies indicate CV disease is a leading cause of death resulting in 17.9 million deaths annually worldwide. Despite aggressive treatment, several clinical trials demonstrate that considerable risk still exists among patients with established CV disease. During the last 30 years people with a BMI (body mass index) greater than or equal to 27 have increased significantly and these people are considered to be at a higher risk. For these reasons a weight management treatment that also reduces CV risk would satisfy an unmet need. To calculate your BMI, click the following link: copy and paste link in your browser
