Toledo Blade, 1877 - "About the middle of September she took a rowboat ride with Robert Bruce Horsfall, till then a reputable young artist. In the darkness in the middle of the river, against her piteous pleading, he doffed all his clothing except [his] bathing suit, which he had on under his garments, and went in swimming. Miss Hoffmann never recovered from the nervous shock, and last night died from its effect."
