This is an Atwater Kent table cabinet style radio Model 55C from the 1920s. It does not currently work and needs repair. My parents bought this at an auction in Northern Ohio in the 1960s and Dad refinished the six-legged cabinet. I don’t remember if it worked at that time but I know that Dad got the radio working at least by the late ‘60s and he’d turn it on occasionally for house guests well into the 1990s. I brought it to Wisconsin in 2000. Several years later I plugged it in but that led to a quick snapping sound as I believe a tube “blew”. It has sat in our living room ever since used only as a beautiful and unique piece of furniture.
All of the electronic parts seem to be there but I am uncertain which or how many need replacement. Please see the photos…perhaps if you are an old radio buff you can tell if a tube is good or not. Five tubes are as follows:
(1) 4 pin Philco Type 45 l1 (the glass is discolored in a spot)
(2) 4 pin RCA Radiotron 45
(3) 5 pin Radiotron UY227
(4) 5 pin Arcturus Detector No 127 (bluish---looks “blown”)
(5) 4 pin Cunningham CX-380
There is also a TUNG-SOL 5 pin. A wire electrical lead to the top of a tube is loose and will require re-soldering.
The electrical cord (which runs down thru the inside of one of the cabinet’s rear legs to the outlet near the floor) is very old although it might not be original; regardless, that cord will need to be replaced. A ground wire and an antenna wire plug into the board and also run down the inside of the other rear leg to an outlet…those leads should be replaced also.
There is a large speaker which will need a new paper cone element but otherwise looks fine. The speaker plugs into a 4 pin socket on the electrical board. Please see the photos…you should be able to make out the radio and speaker serial numbers on the metal tags seen in the photos. The radio unit does lift out of the cabinet and is quite heavy.
The Kiel Cabinet was most likely made in Milwaukee not even 50 miles from where it has returned to. It has a charm about it and is sturdy enough for regular use as a table. It has a beautiful 4 fold butterflied veneer on the top board. There are several discolored small spots along with other signs of age and some wear…but for being about 100 years old, not bad at all.
There is also a one page paper entitled “Instructions for Installing ATWATER KENT Panel Type Receiver and Chassis Speaker in Kiel Golden Voice Table”. The paper is original and very brittle…it is taped heavily on the underside.
I have tried to describe this item accurately and fully. Please study the photos (all 24 of them) and ask any questions. This is sold AS IS.
We live about an hour's drive from both Chicago and Milwaukee near the Wisconsin and Illinois border just several miles north of Richmond, IL.
I hope you can give it a good home...it's had only 2 for the last 60 years! Thank you for reading.
