This poster is not only RARE, it’s very likely that Drew Carey and I are the only ones who have a copy of it — read on.

I wrote/produced this poster way back in 1992 when a relatively unknown comedian named Drew Carey had agreed to perform at the local advertising awards show in Cleveland. He’d had his first big break by “killing” on Johnny Carson a few months earlier, but most people had no idea who he was (it was 3 years before The Drew Carey Show started).

I asked his agent for a headshot and this is the photo they provided. I noticed it inadvertently looked exactly like the photos from a famous Timex ad campaign running at the time, wherein celebrities were posed just like this, showing off the Timex watch on their wrist.

So I decided to parody that Timex campaign for this Drew Carey poster.

The headline — running circular — reads: “He Takes A Licking And Keeps On Schticking.”

The night of the awards show, I met Drew. He had mentioned to a group of us ad folks how much he loved the poster and wanted to know who did it. I told him I did and he said many very kind things about it. He then asked if there was any way I could get him a copy and I said, “Sure, I’ll send one to your agent on Monday.” He got a big smile on his face and exclaimed, “Hey, no foolin’?” I told him it was as good as done, and the following Monday I mailed his agent a poster to give to Drew.

As I mentioned, this poster is not only RARE, it’s very likely that Drew Carey and I are the only ones who have a copy of it, as they were mailed to only a few CSCA ad club members in 1992 to promote the show — and since he wasn’t famous, I’m pretty sure the posters all ended up in the garbage, as there’d have been no good reason for anyone to save it.

The overall dimensions are: 18” Width x 22” height. Note that the first photo has a white background behind it (to show the edges) and the second photo is the poster by itself on a dark table.

This poster is an ORIGINAL print. It’s in EXCELLENT condition and is UNUSED. There are NO RIPS, NO TEARS, NO HOLES and NO FADING. It’s been well-preserved in my flat file cabinet for 31 years.

And you can rest assured, no other Drew Carey fan has one of these!

$275 or best offer for a valuable collector's item.

Happy to answer any questions.

Dave
