Position Summary
The Pneumatic Driller (Missile Crew) is responsible for operating pneumatic boring equipment (“missiles”) to create underground pathways for conduit installation. This role requires strong technical skill, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and effectively as part of a mobile field crew. The pneumatic driller ensures accurate bores, proper site preparation, hazard mitigation, and reliable equipment performance to support fiber and utility construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
Drilling & Field Operations
Operate pneumatic boring tools to create underground pathways for conduit installation.
Read and interpret staking sheets, job prints, and bore paths to ensure accurate alignment.
Perform site prep including locating utilities, verifying clearances, and ensuring safe entry/exit points.
Monitor bore progress, adjust as needed, and ensure proper depth, pitch, and trajectory.
Assist with pulling conduit, verifying bore integrity, and restoring job sites to required standards.
Equipment Handling & Maintenance
Conduct daily inspections of pneumatic missiles, hoses, air compressors, and related tools.
Troubleshoot and resolve basic mechanical or operational issues in the field.
Maintain clean, organized, and functional equipment to reduce downtime.
Safety & Compliance
Follow all EnterSource safety standards, OSHA requirements, and industry best practices.
Participate in job hazard analysis (JHA) and tailgate safety meetings.
Ensure all underground utility locates are completed and respected before drilling.
Teamwork & Communication
Work closely with crew leads, locators, and installers to complete projects efficiently.
Communicate site conditions, risks, and progress to supervisors.
Represent EnterSource professionally with landowners, clients, and the public.
Required Qualifications
Experience operating pneumatic boring equipment or other underground construction tools (preferred but not required — training available).
Ability to read job prints, maps, and utility locates.
Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability.
Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Commitment to safe work practices.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in telecom, fiber installation, horizontal drilling, or utility construction.
Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and underground construction procedures.
Experience working on two- or three-person field crews.
Work Environment
Outdoor fieldwork in varying terrain and weather.
Fast-paced environment with daily travel between job sites.
Use of hand tools, pneumatic tools, and heavy equipment support systems.
