My name is Henry Scheffer, and I run the tutoring business Hyperion Tutoring. I offer online tutoring for middle school, high school, and college-level biology, chemistry, and algebra. I'm also happy to talk about doing classes for younger students or those just interested in biology or chemistry. I'm open to either individual lessons 1-on-1 with students, or if you have a few students interested in a group class/study group, I'd be happy to discuss options. Please feel free to call or text me at (708) 497-0483 for a free consultation to discuss your student's needs and goals. Feel free to check out my website at wwwdot hyperiontutoring dotcom. First session half off!
I have over ten years of tutoring experience working with a variety of students from different educational and socioeconomic backgrounds. I'm happy to work out a tutoring schedule that fits your student's school and extracurricular commitments. I've worked with several students doing intensive or online courses, and I'm able to offer daily supplemental tutoring or teaching if that's something you're looking for. Additionally, I'm particularly experienced in tutoring high school and college students through large-scale/final projects and labs.
Lastly, if your child is homeschooled, we can discuss a custom curriculum to teach them if you need at-home support. I've worked with several homeschool families before, and I'm very comfortable with teaching classes from scratch and designing a curriculum that works for them and is accommodating. I'm also happy to figure out logistics for a group of homeschool students if there are several families interested in a routine math or science class.

My Teaching Philosophy
My philosophy focuses on a two-way relationship formed with the student. I believe that every student can learn pretty much any subject, and that the main predictors of their success are the teaching styles being employed, the motivation of the student and teacher, and of course, the resources available to the student. Depending upon what the student and I have decided to focus on for the session, I usually employ an adapted Socratic method, which will allow the student to figure out answers independently and build critical thinking skills. My biggest priorities when tutoring are a student's comprehension of the material, their success in a class (if applicable), and that they develop a way of thinking that will allow them to move further and deeper into a subject if they desire.
Experience
My areas of expertise range from natural history and evolutionary biology, polymer chemistry, and nuclear science. In biology specifically, I've worked in genetics, microbiology, ecology, cellular biology, biochemistry, and developmental biology. Students at the middle, high school, and college levels are frequently switching scientific subjects either by the month or semester, and my broad knowledge base allows me to stay with a student and continue to build a relationship as they grow and progress. I also have experience teaching students with certain conditions like ADHD and dyslexia, and I would be happy to discuss what strategies we can implement to help students with those.
