THE LANGUAGE OF MUSIC
What are the notes in a Bbmin9 chord? Why those? How does it work? What’s a ii V I chord progression in the Key of F Major? Is that a familiar sound? What’s a key change?—and how did Elton John change keys so smoothly in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road?
If you want to reach your potential as a musician you simply have to understand this stuff. Music is meant to flow. You can chase the musical ideas in your head—but can you catch them?
MEET LANCE
Hello! I started playing bass and guitar in 1983 and began teaching in 1990. I’ve worked with hundreds of guitar and bass students many of whom are now lifelong players.
I grew up playing Rush, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Journey, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Queen, Sting & The Police, Bob Marley, Van Morrison, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys, The Dead, Peter Gabriel, Eagles, Motown etc. etc. I’ve played everything from rock to blues to country to reggae.
I graduated from Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California in 1990 and earned a BA Philosophy from the University of London in 2003.
I’ve attended clinics and workshops with amazing musicians including Les Paul, Allan Holdsworth, Norman Brown, Eric Johnson, Albert Lee, Paul Gilbert, Mike Stern, Joe Pass, Andy Summers, Hiram Bullock, John Entwistle, Billy Sheehan, Tim Bogert, Jeff Berlin & Alan Parsons.
I’ve been working on songs with drummer Kenny Aronoff since 2017.

TESTIMONIALS
“Lance was my guitar teacher for over 8 years. He is the best of the best! Lance can play any style of music and caters his lessons towards your interests. More importantly, he teaches you how to learn on your own. Lessons with Lance provided me with the skills to evolve as a person - with and without a guitar in my hand. Highly recommended!”

“Lance was my guitar instructor for 5 years. I was brand new when I began, and Lance was extremely helpful and methodical with his teaching. Lance is amazing at getting you to think about music in ways that you may not have previously done. I absolutely recommend Lance to anyone for his professionalism, genuine attitude, skill, and flexibility.“

“Not only was Lance was my first guitar instructor, but after 20 years of playing guitar, I can honestly say he was the best teacher I've ever had. From the very first lessons, Lance focused on musicality and mastering the fundamentals and brought the best out of me by making learning fun and relevant to my musical interests. In my first few years of study, the ear training, music theory, and repertoire I learned, and the ability to transcribe and play by ear, are the the same skills that got me though music school, a masters degree at Berklee College of Music, and the role as a guitarist in the Navy Band. In fact, I used one of the songs I learned with Lance, ‘SRV,’ by Eric Johnson, in my Navy audition. Take lessons with Lance, you'll be happy you did.“
