CHARTRES STREET: Lace balconies and intriguing doorways line Chartres St., leading to the solid bulk of the Cabildo and the towering spires of the St. Louis Basilica. The illustrious Cabildo, once the seat of Spanish colonial government, today houses a wealth of Louisiana history. The beloved basilica, built in 1794, presides over Jackson Square and is one of New Orleans most cherished landmarks.

"BRULATOUR COURTYARD". Shuttered windows, winding stairways and lush foliage make the Brulatour Courtyard one of the most popular landmarks in the Vieux Carre. The mansion was built in 1816 by a French wine importer and manufacturer of fine furniture. The enormous black pot, often found on French Quarter patios, probably contained olive oil imported from Spain, while the stone slabs of the courtyard provided ballast for the Spanish ships."
