A wonderful find. Whether for use, decoration, or just to ponder the genius ways we used to make things!
Age unknown, but definitely old. I received this is a lot of vintage woodworking tools and had NO idea what it was. A fire starter? A toy? Something for spooling yarn?
All signs point to a drill. From what I've found, there would be a pointed or beveled piece inserted in the end, and then you pull the handle downward while the string is wrapped tightly. It doesn’t take very much force at all. This turns the bit at the end at a surprisingly high speed. The drilling motion naturally re-wraps the string - and repeat as needed.
The 'shaft' is approx. 18". The 'wings' are approx. 11". The bas is 2" in diameter
The tag was attached and has scribbles I can't decipher - I'll leave on. I think this was sold at one point for $33.
Further research revealed stories of these being used in African Missionaries and camps.
The piece is stored in a smoke free environment.
