Alla Prima : Everything I Know about Painting
By Richard Schmid
Softcover in an excellent condition, 193 pages
In 1964 Schmid was the focus of the film The Secret Squint, which was awarded the C.I.N.E. Award. In 1990 Schmid was a finalist for The Hubbard Art Award for Excellence. During his distinguished career as a painter, author, and teacher, Richard Schmid had been a candid spokesman for what is known as the Grand Manner, a certain mingling of virtuosity and unrestrained joy in art.
Alla prima, Italian for "at first attempt", is a painting technique that involves applying wet paint layers on top of other wet layers, usually in a single sitting. It's also known as "direct painting" or "au premier coup", which translates to "in the first shot" in French
The book is not cheap, but, per many reviewers, it is a priceless one.
Some reviews:
This book is not instructional in the sense of providing any kind of easy recipes to do paintings. But it is full of excellent and surprisingly specific advice on all kinds of areas that go into making a painting including composition, color, how to start a painting, how to know when to stop, et cetera. I've read through it several times and find something new each time. It is a bit pricey though. But if you like Richard Schmid, it's a must-have.
Alla Prima is an excellent read. As a matter of fact, if you can't read, the pictures alone are worth the price of the book. Richard Schmid has advice and knowledge to inspire and guide any artist--whatever their level of expertise.
