Selling this highly collectible Villeroy & Boch-Mettlach ceramic shield-shaped wall plaque from an estate collection.
It features the image of an American Eagle perched on the American flag (discounted from the sales tag still attached showing that $600 was paid). The bird is bracketed by the images of the Capitol Building and the Statue of Liberty and has 13 yellow stars representing the 13 original colonies located between its outstretched wings. The flag itself has been draped over a large bunch of laurels bearing small red berries. There is a blue ribbon beneath the laurel emblazoned with the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The edges of the plaque are painted in a forest green hue (close-up photos to confirm) which complements the colors found on the face of the piece.
The plaque is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The plaque shows signs of age consisting of fine age-related crazing to the glaze, however not unexpected for its almost 140 years of age. The back of the plaque bears the green Villeroy & Boch Mettlach Mercury backstamp used between 1874-1909 reading "MADE IN GERMANY" along with the number "1290", "GESCHUTZT" and title "U.S.". There are impressed numbers present including "3225" and date "84" representing 1884. The foot rim has been factory pierced with two holes, with a wire strung across enabling the piece to be displayed suspended from a wall. The plaque measures 13.25" by 11" at its widest points.
This patriotic ceramic wall plaque displays beautifully and is ready to hang on receipt. The piece could also be placed in an easel and showcased on a table or shelf. A terrific antique collectible and priced much lower than the limited number of other sellers. Can ship via insured carrier for an additional pass-through charge (cost to buyer)
