Kugel is the German word for "sphere". Kugel Christmas tree ornaments evolved from glass witch balls hung in windows to ward off evil spirits in 17th century England. In the early 19th century, manufacturers added silver linings to witch balls to make them more reflective. Victorians hung these reflective balls in windows or placed larger orbs on pedestals in gardens as gazing balls.
