The Pentax Spotmatic F is the final and most advanced model in the legendary Spotmatic series of 35 mm SLRs, produced by Asahi Optical Co. from 1973 to 1976. It retains the classic M42 screw mount but introduces open-aperture TTL metering—a major leap forward—when paired with Super-Multi-Coated (S-M-C) Takumar lenses that feature an aperture coupling tab.
It features a fully mechanical shutter with speeds from 1 sec to 1/1000 sec, plus Bulb, and a center-weighted light meter powered by a 1.35V PX625 battery (modern 1.5V silver oxide batteries can be used due to a bridge circuit). The viewfinder offers 0.88× magnification, a microprism focusing screen, and a depth-of-field preview switch. The camera includes a hot shoe, self-timer, multiple exposure capability, and a shutter lock collar to prevent accidental exposures.
The Pentax Spotmatic F (SPF) added full-aperture metering to all of the features found in the Spotmatic II. Full aperture metering required the newer Super-Multi-Coated (S-M-C) Takumar lenses with an aperture-position linkage to the camera. The camera retained backwards compatibility with all earlier Takumar lenses.
