Uses M12x1.75x30mm solid metal inserts (pre-threaded inside & outside).
This Time-Sert Kit, used only ONE time (really!), utilizes solid threaded metal inserts (rather than helicoils) to repair stripped threads where head bolts seat in the bottoms of the holes in the aluminum engine block. (Threads in an aluminum block can strip rather easily and unexpectedly.) Kit contains all the original items (except 6 of the 10 initial/included inserts):
1. Core Drill (bit)
2. Tap
3. Insert Driver (for screwing solid inserts into drilled/tapped holes)
4. Drill Bushing (positioned into fixture guide hole)
5. Alignment pin [more rod-like; fits inside (and is longer than) bushing]
6. Bolts for securing fixture to block (so fixture guides drill bit etc. to work straight down
the center of a hole):
2 short
2 medium
2 long
7. Drill Fixture (for positioning/guiding drill bit, tap, and driver tool)
8. Metal depth ruler
9. (Pretty much empty) Plastic container of thread locking fluid (like
Loctite; you’ll need to get more)
10. (5/6 full) Plastic container of insert driver oil
11. 4 (of original 10) solid metal threaded (Time-Sert) inserts [M12 x 1.75 x 30mm length] --
part # 12179
12. Laminated instructions for using kit. (printed on both front and back sides)
13. “Tips for Using the 4900 Kit” -- written up by seller as a result of this kit’s use
14. ADDED LOWER HOLES BUSHING: Also contains a part not in the original kit. Bottom head bolts are longer than top head bolts, so head bolt holes in bottom of the block are a bit deeper. Kit’s drill bushing does not allow drill and tap to go as far down into the bottom holes as they really should. A special part was made to enable a drill bit and tap to go a little deeper. It is a short, hollow bushing about 9/16 inch long and 3/4 inch wide. Fitting into the fixture’s guide hole, it replaces the kit’s drill bushing (but just for bottom/lower holes). It is marked with green coloring (which rubs off very easily) at each end.
The original kit cost $470 brand new. [Have bill to prove it.] It included about $40 worth of solid Time-Sert inserts (at $3.91 each). The used kit has four remaining inserts, which are obviously not enough to drill/tap 10 holes on each side of the block (total of 20 holes). Purchaser must procure the number of inserts required for a particular job. Inserts can be purchased from Time-Sert dealers —e.g., Mechanics Tools and Bits (www.mechanicstoolsandbits.com).
Kit without initial 10 inserts would cost about $430 retail. Price about $500 elsewhere online. Because the kit has been used ONLY ONCE (on a '91 Eldorado), price is $209 (includes the added special bushing and the four remaining inserts). Additional charge for delivery. You could probably look high and low and not find a better deal.
