A good example is the pictured Estwing Fireside Friend which is a 14-inch, 4-lb. firewood-splitting maul and is all one-piece forged steel construction, so that the four-pound head can never "fly off" the handle. (It can be found on Amazon for $34.98.) I will use it to split wood chunks of sizes no larger than 5" x 5" x 8" down to smaller wood chunk sizes for smoking meats. The final chunk size might be 4" x 3" x 2" or thereabouts. I'm also not opposed to using an appropriate wedge and mallet if you have that instead, but it seems like a maul that is close to 14 inches might be better. I would finish the final cuts with my miter saw, which might not be best or safest, but I don't own a band saw.
